If you are planning a highway trip this summer, now is a good time to brush up on your know ledge of the law and of express highway driving techniques. For this purpose, the Illinois State Bar association has come up with a number of tips based on Illinois law, most of which make equally good sense when you are driving in other states too. 1. Changing lanes. Always activate the appropriate turn signal to indicate your inten tion to move from one lane of traffic to another. Drive de fensively and never change la nes unless you can do so safe ly -- even if you have signalled. 2. Merging traffic. In Illinois all drivers on merging road ways (or traffic lanes) are re quired to adjust speed and ve hicular position to avoid col lision. For example, if you are drhrtng tir the-ciutside lane of an express highway, you must look out for vehicles coming into your lane from access roads. You DON'T have the right of way. 3. Obey posted speed. This means posted minimum speeds as well as maximums. In the absence of posted mini mums, you must drive fast enough so that you do not obstruct the normal flow of traffic. If there is no posted maximum speed, the legal speed limit is 65 m.p.h. on the highway and 30 m.p.h. in town. 4. Don't pick up hitchhikers. Many states prohibit hitchhik ing and may penalize motor ists who pick up hitchhikers. Illinois law says: "No person shall stand in a roadway for the purpose of soliciting a ride from the driver of any private vehicle." 5. Keep auto registration card handy. In Illinois, you can keep your auto registration card in your billfold, purse or else where. Many states require the registration card to be in the car at all times and you could be detained if unable to provide immediate proof of ownership. 6. No littering. Illinois pro vides a fine of from $5 to $50 for cluttering up the country side with chewing gum or can dy wrappers, beer cans or any thing else that should be de posited in a trash can, rather than on the road. Other states have even stiffer penalties. 7. Plan ahead. Look for signs that indicate you are approach ing the exit you wish to take. If you miss it, don't back up and don't try to turn around. Both manuevers are prohibit ed on express highways in Il linois and other states. You must go on to the next exit. 8. In case of emergency. The customary sign of a traveler in distress is a raised hood. If you run out of gas, have a flat or engine trouble, pull to the right-shoulder, of the road, off the pavqd portion. Lift the hood and display a white hand kerchief from the left front door. Under Illinois law, a turn signal may not be flashed as a sign of a disabled vehicle, al though dual flashing rear lights may be used. Wait for a state trooper or highway service truck. Don't try to flag down another traveler and don't walk or hitchhike. MY DEEPEST gratitude to all those who so kindly remem bered me during my recent stay in the hospital. CHARLES WAGNER 6271 I wish to thank all the girls that assisted me during the Cancer Drive. Their hard work ip greatly appreciated. The action took the form of a counter-claim in a suit brought against NFO by Mid-America and certain of its members. NFO*s action seeks treble damages amounting to $125,052,000 and in addition the dissolution of the coopera tives in question. Beatrice Foods Company and its subsidiary, Boswell Dairy Company were also named as defendants to these charges as were certain individuals in the Mid-America and AMPI or ganizations. The NFO action charges the defendants with conspiring to fix the price and control the supply of raw milk in midwest- » ern markets and to exclude N- FO and all persons from those markets. The case also challen ges mergers, acquisitions and consolidations of AMPI and Mid-America. It also charges that pursuant to a conspiracy the defendant organizations^ JUNE 2, 1971 have utilized their economic po wer by means of threats, boy-i cotts and coercion to induct NFO customers to refrain from purchasing milk from it. r I l I i FOR FAST RESULTS This BANK NOTE Means SAVINGS On Your Next JVcto Car. .
