R. Bruce Wad-* dell (R-33rd) charged last Fri day. "But they can guess a- gain!" Waddell said the Authority had sent him a tollway pass so that he could travel any Ill inois toll road free of charge. He said he had not requested the pass. "I haven't used it; and I don't intend to," the legisla tor said. "I don't consider my self exempt from paying tolls any more than I am excused from paying taxes." Waddell said he was "in censed" at the Authority's sing ling him out for "special fa vors." "Fve always been an out spoken critic of the Tollway Authority, and I shall continue to be until they develop a lit tle common sense and concern for the people of the State of Illinois." Anyone who has anything to donate, please call 385-0536 or 385-5689 to let us know if you will bring the items pr if you want them picked up. INCLOSING Keep a closer watch for chil dren now that school is out. See you next week! The local Republican rei-er- ated his charge that the Au thority "acted totally without consideration for the people in our area" in building the toll road on a curved route, "cut ting across every form in its path," Waddell said, "and cut ting off farmers' access to their own land. "Some so-called expert told them they should zig-zag the road to keep drivers awake," he said. yDid they take into consideration the people's property rights? Did they con sider the effect on the econ omy of our area? "No. Tbey just decidedtoac- cept the 'expert's' advice on making the road safe. How iron ic that only last year the state spent a good deal of money straightening US 20 between Rockford and Galena--to make the highway safe! "If they wanted to cut down on the monotony of a limited access thoroughfare," Waddell said, "why didn't they plant trees at varying intervals and in various groupings on the right-of-way? What can be more monotonous than a uniform, va cant shoulder on each side of the road, a good five times the necessary width? "Planting trees would make too much sense, though. That would also imply a regard for -Conservation. Instead, they're actually planning to hack down virgin woods -- beautiful stands of trees -- for the extension. Their sense of ecological val ues is zero, and that disturbs the heck out of me." POLITICAL CORNER Efforts Made To Reactivate Young Democrats Announcement has been made of the reactivation of the Young Democrats club of McHenry County. Peter Hellios of Mc Henry hopes to revive young people's interest in the work of the organization, which was forced to abandon activities a year ago when an insufficient number of newcomers joined the ranks and members reach ed the age of 35, the age lim itation. Anyone between 18 and 35 is eligible to join. The goal at this time, ac cording to Hellios, is to urge registration by the 18-to-21- year-old group. He asked that there are only 10018-year-olds registered in the county at this time. Persons interested in reac tivating the Young Democrats club should call 385-5542 for further information.
