HE SAWFISH ZL0$£11 (SELATEP TO. THE- .v by Liz Nolan Tuesday, the 8th, found the sun shining warmly on a large and enthusiastic group of women golfers at McHenryC.C. as they participated in the annual Flag Day Tournament. Teeing off promptly at 8:30, the foursome of Buss, A. Johnson, Reihansperger and Nolan set the pace for some exceptionally fine golfing. Dropping her putt for a birdie deuce on the 18th, Anna Johnson took the lead in Class A with a net 76, only to be knocked out of the running by Ettie Lovett who took the honors of the day with a net of 72. This was followed closely by Alvina Yopp's 75 net. A new record sale of No. 11 irons may be in the offing after the very able demonstrations of that particular club were given by two of the women Tuesday. With a fine sense of direction and purpose, Bea Horn pulled her No. 11 from her bag, guided her ball through the opening between the sand traps and promptly sank her approach on number 5. Meanwhile, over on the 18th fairway after her drive and a fine woodshot put her well over the creek, Joanie Buss ran into a little tough luck when somewhere nearby a s t r a t eg ica l ly exp loded firecracker caused her to dub the nex t two sho t s . Un dismayed, Joanie drew the magical No. 11 iron from her bag and, from eighty yards out, dropped her approach for a par 5. -Which only proves there is more than one way to skin a cat; or, in this case, to par a hole. This will also be qualifying for Match Play which will begin the following week and go for four rounds. Added Note: Humbl ing us to the realization that we are not always masters of our fate, the weather once again intervened in some scheduled fun golf. Friday evening brought forth a sizeable turnout of enthusiastic but skeptical players for the opening round of the annual Couples Golf at McHenry C.C. The skepticism was well- founded when the rumbling thunder and flashing lightning fo rced the more s t a lwar t duffers back to the club house. With most couples finishing only four or five holes, no complete scores can be turned in. Some of the would-be Palmers and Nicklauses were off to a great start while others, like the Guntners, were having a bit of out-of-bounds trouble. Darkening clouds cut visibility considerably, but not so much that the action on No. 11 by the Spengels was not observed. It seems that "Teddy Bear", one of the really big hitters, ran into a few problems and wound up taking a 7 while his lovely wife, Ginny, more often found at home with the children, dropped her putt for an easy par 4. So goes the game of golf. Next week the story may be different. Anyhow, let's drink up. Went over to the opening of the Youth League at the V.F.W. Sunday and was disappointed at the small crowd in at tendance. It would be nice to see Moms and Dads with the boys. Of course, we understand that some just cannot make it. They are a fine group of boys, those Youth Leaguers. And there are some real good ball players on those teams. We can't sing enough praises for the men and women who give their time, efforts, and knowledge of the game to keep those boys playing ball. It's a grand old game. Maybe you don't see the women out on the field. They are behind the scenes. Just think how they have to plan meals around game time and practice time when their husbands are managing and coaching the boys. Moms are nice people. ^""UfcWenry*^ ) Men's 16" I § Softball League j by Jerry Miller After four weeks of exciting Softball games, Hettermann's remains as the only team un defeated.
