Twice Told Tales FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the rili^ of June 18 ,1931) V Cadet Floyd , E. Covalt returned to his home here Sunday after a most successful year at St. John's Military Academy, at Delafield, Wis, An event of note which may never be repeated in the history of McHenry occurred last week when three McHenry high school graduates received degrees conferred upon them at the commencement exercises of the University of Illinois colleges of medicine, dentistry and school of Pharmacy in Chicago. They are William Nye, son of Dr. N.J. Nye and Leo Thelen of Chicago, for merly of McHenry, and Miss Grace Martin from the school of nursing at St. Anthony <De Padua hospital which is af filiated with the university of Illinois. Seventy-four friends, and relatives of\A.G. Bishop of Medford^ OreT'^spent Sunday with him in a picnic at Bar nard's Mill near Wonder Lake. H E. Buck, our well known plumber, witnessed his first major league baseball game recently and received about as much kick out of it as he did from his first circus. He was fortunate enough to see Kiki Cuvler give a wonderful exhibition of defensive work. Mrs. Lee Andruss of Rich mond died June X\. Funeral services were Keld Sunday afternoon at the M.E. church at Richmond. Twenty graduates from the eighth grade of St. Mary's school took place at the com munity high school they received their diplomas from Father C.S. Nix who also made an appropriate address. A three act play entitled "The Prodigal Soq" was given and several piano solos and duets were given by the pupils. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 20. 1946) Four young ladies from McHenry and the surrounding community were presented with their certificates as graduate nurses at the seventy- sixth commencement of Loyola University, Chicago, on June 12. They are Virginia Williams, Nadine Schaefer, Betty C. Wagner and Claire Freund. There were some heavy hearts and a few tears this week as old St. Patrick's church fell to the ground. St. Patrick's congregation was organized in 1840, thirteen years before the erection of the old Church by the Rev. De St. Palais. The first Catholic settlers of that £arly date were John and Michael Sutton, George Frisby and James Gibbs. Until 1853, Holy Mass &as offered occasionally and the sacraments administered in the homes of a few residents. In that year there was such an influx of immigrants from Kilkenny, Ireland, that it was necessary to build a church. Many people braved the cold weather last ̂ Thursday evenig to watch the softball games at the high school. In the opened the Thursday night team played heads-up baseball to beat the Co-ops irrSft^ose one, 6 to 5 Walter Low again twirled for the "Nighters" and turned in a nice piece of performance. "Howie" Freund, star left fielder, helped the cause by making several beautiful catches. "Moe" Meyer had his fast ball in the groove and had better control than usual, but his support was weak. At the seventy-fifth annual commencement of the university of Illinois June 16 f degrees were received by six persons from McHenry county including two fpom the McHenry community, Curtis Newman > who received his B.S. degree in accounting and Everett Siedschlag of Spring Grove who was awarded his B.S. degree in agriculture. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 22, 1961) , ' Judy, nine year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Osmon of Lakeland Park, remained unconscious Friday morning after suffering internal injuries when her bike was struck by a truck on Meadow Lane in Lakeland Park. Following action by the City Council on Monday night, the new municipal code being prepared for McHenry will include a curfew law. Math Eichinger has be<»n X}.
