His claim as the inventor was so broad that over 600 suits were filed against him by others who were also inventing telephones. Bell won them all. By the end of August 1877, 1300 phones were in use. Samuel Morse began working i( on 'his electrical telegraph systeirf after a trip to France in 1832. The history > of telegraph and telephone from the 1830's to^the early 1900's was one of hundreds of little companies fighting each- Wanted other over patents and fran chises. Out of the whole mess emerged The Bell Telephone company and Western Union. Most of their gradual takeover was accomplished by skillful, behind the scenes business aneuvers. Patents were bought but soon after 1900 they began to rapidly appear in homes. Millions were made. In fact in July 1900 twelve manufacturers advertised in THE AMERICAN ELEC TRICIAN that they made "Bell type" phones. Factories makin these phones were located in Chicago, Cleveland, Lafayette, Indiana, Philadelphia, Akron, Ohio, St. Louis and a town which has disappeared from the Zip Code books called Mianus, Connecticut. In fact at one point Bell eliminated Western Union as a competitor by making an^; agreement that Bell would stay out of the telegraph business if WU would stay out of phones. The deal was arranged in 1880 and Bell took over 56,000 phones from Western Union, All of this action eventually created one of'the most popular American antiques. The wall phone, usually in an oak box with the crank handle The earliest ones were mainly commercial Though box phones are being widely reproduced they only imitate poorly the authentic piec which had a heavy quality of metal, wood and workmanship which cannot be, duplicated today. The cost would be greater than the price of the true Antique phone Most phone and telegraph items made before 1900 appeal mainly to 1 specialists and museums. But any phone made after that date is now a decorator's piece selling from $30 00 to $150 00 depending on stvle, uniqueness and condition -17113) 'Copyright 197!
