Rev. I.F. Huber gave the invocation and James . R. Perkins, mayor of Fox River Grove, the address of welcome. He urged the listeners not only to be historically-minded but to be conservation-minded and work toward saving the beautiful Fox river and the county area. Mrs. Anne Mcllrath, chairman of the meeting, opened the program with a b^ief' history of' the Grove, /telling how it received its name from the F.R. Picnic Groves which was on 80 acres of land bought in 1869 by the parents of « Eman Opatrny, who developed it and had special trains run ning out from Chicago, with as many as twenty-two coaches (eleven to a train) with a special spur direct to the Grove. An old picture of the castle pavilion and resort hotel, with windows purchased from building of the Columbian , Exposition held in Chicago in 1893, was on display. It was the only object saved when the hotel was destroyed by fire in 1918. A scrap book with many old photographs, corrapiled by Ed Cernocky, son-in-law to Eman Opatrny, was of unusual interest. He also recounted amusing anecdotes of the early hotel days, how his mother at the beginning of each summer season would borrow $200 and at the close of the season would repay it, with never an I.O.U. or receipts exchanged. Sometimes the entire amount^ was in gold coins. Edward Opatrriy, the oldest citizen born in the Grove, was present. The Grove was laid out after the model of Riverside, 111., with no straight streets, all v^inding. On display were early pic tures and original molds used ° in the building of the Bettendorf Castle, now owned by Mr. and Mrs. Wren, who operate it as a honeymooners' paradise. Some of the original stones were broken open to show the quartz- crystal formation. Norge Ski club had a replica of the ski jump and slide set up at the entrance to the rooi The "show and tell" also an interesting part of the program of * the society, Revealed a number of in teresting items -- old lamps that can no longer be classified as antiques because they have been modernized for elec tricity; a miniature ̂ f^abin made of twigs andVMBtzers used to construct it; a mraal of honor from the King of Norway. A bayonet with French in scription and name, with date of 1878, was found in the attic of a house 125 years old at 412 E. Calhoun street, Woodstock. Thif was identified as having been used in the Franco Prussian War of 1878. This was shown by Mrs. Clyde Holmes present owner of the home, who donated the bayonet to the society during the meeting. This was one of the most interesting and successful of the regional meetings held by the society in the county.
