DON PEASLEY PHOTO Winners In Junior Golf Meet Advance To State Illinois' six member con tingent to the National In surance Youth Classic in late August was determined at the McHenry Country Club Thursday from a field of 53 junior golfers (17 and under) who won in local tourneys to vie in the state 36-hole tourney. The winners go to the national meet August 25-29. Winds hampered scoring the first 18 holes Tuesday, but most of the players responded to Thursday's sunshine and cool weather with better scores. Only one stroke separated the top three players. Ken Kellaney, 15-year-old Rockford youth, won first with a 79-76 - 155. Brad Springer, Napefville, had an 82-74-156, and Terry McDonald, Arlington Heights also fired the same score-80-76- -156. Springer won the second place honors by defeating McDonald in a sudden death playoff on the first hole. At the end of 27 holes, the three top golfers were tied at 119 each. Kellaney gained an advantage at the 11th hole with a birdie three to go one stroke up and he held to that margin SEvrwuvr? Bracke was the first round leader on Tuesday with a 75. He wound up with a 161 for the two days. by Liz Nolan From a woman's point of view, Tuesday the thirteenth of July, was an exciting day at the McHenry Golf course. With Match Play tournament fast drawing toward the finish, the semi-finals on Tuesday found some mighty tight competitive golf being played by all the gals. Virginia Turner and yours truly played tenaciously through the first 18 holes to wind up a tie, causing a sudden- death play-off. A sculled ap proach shot on my part handed the extra hole to Virginia to put her in the finals in Class A, In Class B Dot Baker and Katherine Bolger emerged the finalists while in Class C Mary Mahoney and Joan Schloskey came out on top. Later in the week the ladies arranged their own individual matches and the results are now in. Ettie Lovett is the new Match Play Tour nament champion over Virginia Turner in Class A. Dot Baker bested K. Bolger for the title in Class B and Mary Mahoney upset Joan Schloskey in Class C. Congratulations go to all three gals for the great games they played. All the pertinent details of the matches are not available but in Class B K Bolger gave D. Baker a real fight and held on through 18 causing another sudden-death play-off. The ladies will enjoy a couple of weeks respite from more serious golf and then Club Championship play will begin August 9 - 72 holes - winding up August 17. In addition to the excitement of semi-final play last Tuesday, many players and spectators had the thrill of meeting and watching touring Pro Orville Moody pair up with our local Pro, Vale Adams, to take on our two local male stars, Ed Buss and Art Jackson in a fine 18- hole round.- Following this great foursome around the course made us wonder what there is about the game that stumps us when they made it look so effortless. Battling increasingly strong winds all around the consistently putting out 300-yard drives, the men put on a great display of golf for the large gallery that grew with each hole that was played. Back to the distaff side. The ladies' travelling team con tinues to (bring honors to McHenry. On the 9th the gals journeyed over to Fort Sheridan where they politely but decisively took 14 of the 18 points. Then, on the 16th they hosted the very tough team from Bonnie Brook and gleaned H of the 18 points. Congratulations, ladies, and -keep up the good work. Paradise Park had their fire put out and have slowed down theirwinningsby 11 opens in the last 2 weeks. All teams had better keep an eye on Mag-Val. They're liable to come alive any week now. Kropan's Landing had low team net last week with a team total of 275 to win golf balls for the week. The Johnsburg Tigers split a pair of tension-packed ball games - squeaking out a 4-3 victory over Melrose Park, then dropping a tough 3-2 game at Dundee. The game against Melrose went eleven innings before the Tigers gained the decision on a dramatic steal of home by Steve Stahlman. The Tigers knocked out a dozen hits as Ted Freund led the way with three. Paul McNabb, Wayne Hiller, and Joe Dehn helped the cause with two hits apiece. Mike Freund pitched eight good innings before tiring in the ninth. Tim Freund then entered the game and pitched excellent ball in gaining the victory. Needing a victory the next day to gain in the standings, Johnsburg came up on the short end of a 3-2 game against Dundee. It was simply a case of not enough hitting by the Tigers as they managed only six base hits. Ted Freund was the only man to collect two hits in leading the meager attack. Johnsburg's defense was ex cellent, and turned in many fine plays throughout the game. Ed Mack pitched well enough to win most games, but had to settle for the loss this time around. It was one of the fastest and best played games of the season, being completed in less than two hours. The Tigers will be home both Saturday and Sunday this weeekend. Saturday the op ponent will be Evanston, with the game beginning at 2. The following day Glen Ellyn comes to town for a contest beginnig at 1:30.
