C.--Arnold Palmer's great victory in the richest tournament of the year, the Westchester Classic (New York), shows that the most popular golfer of the last two decades is far from finished. The way he took charge in the Westchester is, rather, no tice to Lee Trevino and Jack Nicklaus, that he isn't through as one of golf's top threats. Palmer took off a couple of weeks before the Westchester to rest. Upon his return, he began the tournament with a 64, then shot three more sub-par rounds for a record 270. That isn't the A barbecue chicken feast and corn roast with all the trim mings will be a special at traction at the Northern Illinois Conservation Club's monthly trapshoot on Aug. 15, on the club grounds three miles west of Antioch on Route 173. Richer by $50,000 for his first-place finish, Palmer is with contests designed to enable ordinary shooters to win a fair share of the prizes against the hot shots. In one event, the High-Low, the gunner with the highest score wins a prize and the lowest shooter wins one. Then there will be white bird events in which the high scoring gun wins, and the lucky nimrod who breaks the white target also wins. The regular targets are black, topped with yellow. If this makes him the fierce competitor of old, again, golf will be far more interesting as a result. Matt' What goes 6n down there in Florida these days? Seems all the sports news comes out of Florida in the winter time Mr. and Mrs Bob Adams and Brian, ventured into McHenry's loop Friday night -- followed the fire engine (at required distance^ then stayed around to see the sights Harry Ferwerda remarked, "You can lead the St Patrick's Day parade with that new "green" car." So there. Fred Meyer! Harry says it's green. Took in the McCullom Luke Sportsman Club annual picnic Sunday at that perfect tree covered spot near Hebron. Fried chicken and sweet corn by the carload Can't beat that. Jerry Mathews gave the crowd a thrill with a perfect landing skydive. Jerry landed right on the mark -- not too far from the water. You should have seen the kids swarm around Next Sunday we hear the Sox Dog House Red Hot! By Jerry Miller After defeating first place Hettermann's last week, Dog House seems to be on fire. They walloped Harmony Resort 34 to 5 Denny Smith was 5 for 5, and was backed up by Dave Smith who also had 5 hits. In all Dog House ripped the ball for 35 hits. Following that ball game, Hettermann's soundly beat Old Bridge 17 to 11. D. Hiller, D. Bentz. and M Bentz each had 3 hits for Hettermann's. Sabatka's 3 hits couldn't quite make up the difference in the score of the game. On Tuesday night Mer's Beach beat Jake 13 to 2. J. Miller had 2 hits and 3 RBI's for Mer's D Weber's 3 hits couldn't do it all for Jake's. In the second game Homan's knocked off Carl's 14 to 3. The star for Homan's was V. Freund who was 3 for 3. J. Bellek's 2 hitS'led the hitting for Carl's Tuesday night, Dog House takes on Old Bridge in what is sure to be a thriller. Don't miss it Game time 7:30 game on a crystal set in the Lund Lower Level. Then our Sundays will be busy following the Club Championship play at McHenry Country Club. Those matches are really great. It is our plan to journey to Chicago's south side this week to see our White Sox win a ball game Look for a first hand report That Eddie Bimbo! We just get our head in the door when he yells "loser!" It just so happend that his Cubs had won a game that day while our Sox had lost a 1-0 decision to the great Vida Blue. Then he gives us a Cub Power banner as we departed Just for the h-- of it we pinned it across our chest (can we help it if our chest has fallen?) and walked out onto brightly lit Riverside Drive. Next time we'll wear it across the rear Tried to give the banner to Frank "Twinkletoes" Cady, but no luck. Now we can believe anything Leo Durocher won an argument with an umpire. Seems we have reported meeting people at eat in' places this summer so three people in the last week asked if we ever eat at home. Yep We have a better cook at home than we can find going out. But, we remodelled our kitchen this summer and it took all summer. Just one blamed thing after another. So -- we moved to the basement with the pots and pans, plus a lot of stored items. There is a 2-burner gas plate down there, but a kitchen and dining room it ain't! So -- after about a 3-day stretch, out we go. Anynow, we like to go out and meet people. Eat, meet and greet suits our fancy. CONSOLIDATE PROGRAMS Job training and placement of welfare "employables" will now be consolidated in the Department of Labor, the state's principal manpower agency. Gov. Richard B Ogilvie last week signed legislation effecting the change, a major goal in his welfare message to the Legislature. What happens when you're offered $18,000 for your $24,200 pile of ashes? Jurewicz, and Carl Maio are still in good shape after averaging 4 and 3 yards a carry respectively in last weekend's contest. Steve Pelot, a running back from North Dakota State who was the second leading rushing leader in the nation this past collegiate season, might also get to see some action. The QB position is still being vied for by two young can didates, John Dobbs and Dave Shelbourne, along with veteran Lee Rice. Dobbs and Rice both saw action last Saturday, with Dobbs moving the ball better on the ground than in the air, however, Shelbourne who broke a total yardage record at Northwestern University this season may get the call this weekend. The defensive line looks very strong, being lead in tackles by North Park's Chuck Burgoon, who has returned to the Rifles from the New Orleans Saints training camp. Burgoon looked exceptionally quick in the Racine game. The defensive line as a whole did not allow a score in the second half last weekend. Head Coach Jerry Sandberg is anxiously looking forward to the first game on friendly ground, and has been very pleased with the Rifles progress to this point. He is not mainly concerned with developing the potential. Game time is 3 p.m. in iiiiii in. Northern lllini Bowmen News iiliiiiiiiiiiiiiiitiiiiiiiimiiiiiiilllllllLllllIU Bowhunting deer season is less than 5 weeks away. With the Wisconsin opening date of September 18 and Illinois opening of Ocotber 1, there is no time like the present to sharpen your aiming eye and strengthen those shoulder muscles for the pull of your 40 to 60 pound hunting bow. Northern lllini Bowmen have scheduled a broadhead shoot on August 15. All bowmen are welcome to the 9th annual "Jack Perry Memorial Broadhead" shoot at the NIB range on Draper road just a mile west of McHenry. Registration will be opened at 7 a.m. by Classification Director, Jean Bird, and closed at 1 p.m. Trophies in the form of unusual deer and bear wall plaques will be given through 3rd place to the winners. Also 3 places are open for bowmen not in organized archery. Archers will also be vying for the "Jack Perry" traveling trophies for highest scores in both barebow and freestyle. Last year's winners, Earl Bird of Wauconda and Don Bronson of Aurora, will return the trophies and compete for them again. An archer winning either 3 times has permanent possession of the trophy. Is your son a bowhunter, too? If he is 12 years or older and shooting with his parent, he may shoot broadheads at the NIB shoot if he wishes. Youth under 12 years old must use field or target tips. Not only will there be some new Rifle faces at the home opener, but there will also be usherettes in hot pants to greet the fans in the stands. The Lake County Rifles have their first home game this Saturday in an exhibition contest against the West Allis Spartans at Carmel High School Stadium in Mundelein. The Rifles are coming off a loss in an exhibition contest against Racine last weekend, but the outlook for the season is very bright. Not only is the offense working out the kinks of a new quarterback, but there have also been some new faces in camp within the past few days. Greg Sharpe, he's 6'4", 220 a tight end from Colorado State University, who just recently cut from the Denver Broncos, has looked like an exceptionally fine receiver in drills. Dave Malhiero, of Miami of Ohio, who had a tryout with the Miami Dolphins last year, is back with the Rifles again to try to find a place on the of fensive line. Another fairly new face in camp is kicking specialist Frank Gellings, who comes to the Rifles from the Regina Roughriders, a Canadian ballclub. Gellings kicked a 35 yard field goal in last Satur day's game and just missed a 40 yard attempt. He also punts and kicks extra points.
