SEPTEMBER 1, 1971 Twice Told Tales FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Aug. 20, 1931) August seems to be a month of birthdays and not to be out done by all its individual residents, the city of McHenry itself should celebrate this month in honor of its fifty-ninth birthday anniversary. It was just fifty-nine years ago on August 10, 1872, that McHenry was incorporated as a village. At the first election held by the authorized voters of the village of McHenry the following of ficers were chosen, President, Richard Bishop, trustees, J.B. Perry, J.M. McOmber, H.C. Smith, John King and F.K. Granger, clerk, Michael Keller and treasurer, Henry Colby. Edwin Erickson, 35 years old of Chicago, a district manager for a mercantile house, was drowned Monday night when he fell off a rowboat which was being towed by a motor boat in Pistakee Lake. Thomas Lawson, four year old son of Mrs. Emily Lawson, was severely injured late Sunday afternoon when he was struck by a car on Riverside drive as he was crossing the street, bruising his entire body and breaking two ribs. Mr. and Mrs. T.J. Walsh spent Thursday in Chicago where they were dinner guests of their son, Richard B. Walsh, at the Merchandise Mart, in honor of the birthday an niversary of Mrs. Walsh. John Adams of Chicago, father of Mrs. Frank Thurwell of McHenry, died very sud denly Aug. 15. He had not been ill and died while resting after his evening meal. The Catholic Casino of Chicago will sing at the Mass Aug. 23 at St. John the Baptist church, Johnsburg. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Aug. 22, 1946) Effective Aug. 15 Horn's tavern and grocery store at McCullom Lake for many years one of that community's most popular business places, changed ownership. Roy and A1 Blake of McHenry took over the former tavern and have named it Roy-Al inn. Paul Struck, better known as "Yardstick", writer of "McCullom Lake on Parade", has taken over the grocery business located in the same building. St. Mary's church was the scene of a lovely wedding Aug. 17 when Miss Lorraine Schmitt became the bride of Mr. Eugene Frost of Wonder Lake. Rt. Rev. Msgr. Nix officiated at the ceremnoy. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gibbs moved from the Patrick Cleary house on Waukegan street to their new home on North Park avenue. Leo D. Kerber will replace George Egbert as instructor of agriculture and biology at the high school. A memorable family reunion was held Sunday at the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Young and sons, when his jnother, Mrs. Catherine Young, her four surviving sons and eight daughters gathered to enjoy the day. About twenty fun seekers from Johnsburg enjoyed a hayride through McHenry, under the supervision of Richard May. The local fire fighters won the water fight tournament held in Richmond last weekend and on Saturday night they defeated the Lake Villa team and on Sunday night returned to capture the victors title over Fox Lake and Spring Grove. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Aug. 24, 1961) For the second time in four years a local girl has claimed the coveted title of state dairy princess. She is the lovely Pat Hogan of Ringwood, who was named for the honor as a climax to ceremonies at the banquet held at Marian Central school in Woodstock. Many local friends of Paul Ramaeker, who made his home here for a time some years ago, will be shocked to learn of his death in an auto accident in Iowa Aug. 22, Ramaeker, 33, and his 10 month old son, Jeffrey, were killed when their car was struck by another near Humboldt, where the Ramaekers live. Critically injured and now in a Rochester, Minn., hospital is Ramaeker's wife, Loretta, also hurt was a son, Craig. Ramaeker was the father of five children, all under six years of age. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Collins of Center street announce the engagement of their daughter, Joan Lenore. to Charles Ashley Henry of Denver, Colo. Miss Kathryn Hiller of Johnsburg and Mr. Marvin B. Bauer of McHenry exchange nuptial vows in a ceremony Aug. 19, performed in St. John the Baptist Catholic church in Johnsburg. Rev. Fr. Blitsch officiated. Mr. and Mrs. Alex Justen have returned from a 7,000 mile trip in which they traveled through Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Utah and then went on into Canada to spend some time at Victoria and Van couver. Mary Lynn Murphy, daughter of Mrs. Evelyn K. Murphy, graduated this month from Chicago Wesley Memorial hospital school of nursing. The Society urges all parents to Hoellers Host Fourteen Guests At Buffet Supper Amelia and Bill Hoeller, of 4801 Chesterfield drive, were again hosts to fourteen guests on the evening of Saturday, Aug. 21. One of the guests, Otto Schmidt, a salesman for the same company that Mrs. Hoeller works for, who is also well-known in barn dance circles, kept everyone well entertained by providing the guitar music for an old fashioned singfest before the supper buffet. Mrs. Hoeller also kept the guests entertained by providing prizes for a very interesting game they played. Other guests included relatives and friends of long standing, who thought country-living is just wonderful! NEW RESIDENTS New in the Ranch type condominiums are Mr. and Mrs. Winkle, Royal, having moved here from the James apartment in McHenry. Mr. Winkle is retired from the McHenry post office'. Mrs. Winkle is a registered nurse and works a few days a week at a nursing home. They love their new dwelling. Louis and Margaret Lacina are also enjoying their new Ranch condominium home at 823 Royal. Mr. Lacina is retired. His hobby is bowling and golfing and they both love to travel. Marge is a housewife and likes to bake and do needle work. They just joined the McHenry Senior Citizens Club Monday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Hessler of 825 Royal drive like the togetherness of their new neighborhood. They are from Portage Park. Mr. Hessler is retired and is enjoying his leisure time listening to good music and reading books of interest. They have two married sons and five grand children. Mrs. Wilson had the canasta card club at her home this week. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Crawford were married 37 years Aug. 26. Mrs. Crawford said with one man too.
