Thursday & Friday 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. 4312 Dennis Blvd. Sunnyside Estates From The Farm GOOD MANAGEMENT Good management remains the key to making high-quality corn or sorghum silage. Start by harvesting crops only at the proper maturity stage. Corn should be well-dented and hard, with only the top leaves of the plant remaining green. Harvest sorghurn when the seeds midway between the top and bottom parts of the head are in the stiff dough stage. Cut both corn and sorghum standing. Chop fine and be certain the knives are sharp and properly adjusted. It is important to keep the top of the silage mass level when filling to keep mold pockets from forming later. In a con ventional silo use a mechanical distributor to level the silo. In a horizontal-type silo, level the top with a wheel tractor and blade. Conventional silo doors and side walls should be air-tight and leak-free. Fill an upright silo over a period of two or three days and refill after the silage has settled. If you follow good management practices silage preservatives added to either corn or sorghum have only limited value. FARMING CAN BE DANGEROUS "Down on the farm" isn't the safest place to be today, especially if you're a farmer, says Ordie Hogsett, University of Illinois Extension safety specialist. For example, consider these farm accident statistics: - Almost 7,000 U.S. farm residents died during the past year and, of these, 1,800 died while working on the farm. --Another 1,700 were disabled on the job. Causes include machinery accidents, light ning. suffocation, poisoning and injury caused by livestock. Clover Edgebrook Heights Clothing - Toys - Pressure cooker - typewriter - deep fat fryer. Miscellaneous. The total death rate in agriculture was 66 persons per 100,000 workers. In contrast, the death rate for industry was only 18 persons per 100,000 workers. Farm accidents affect temporary farm employees as well as farmers, Hogsett says. For example, 700 non-farm residents died while working on farms. And 40,000 non-farmers were disabled while employed on farms. Farmers may have "good country air," Hogsett says, but if they're not safety-conscious, they won't live to enjoy it. 385-4227 9 2271 GARAGE SALE Edgebrook Heights 3902 High Street Gold plated stainless flat ware, hide-a-bed, tape re corder, cocktail dresses, formals, many useful items. The .American family pays only 16 cents of its entire income dollar for FOOD items for the family table. This is the lowest in the world. One farmer feeds forty-five Americans. The agricultural industry is a 50 billion dollar business. Some 5 million workers, with a 5 billion dollar payroll, do the processing, distribution and sales of the agriculture products.
