Although over 75 per cent believed in God, only about 25 per cent said they believed in Hell. Perhaps that is due to the static instead of the modern dynamic concept of HeU. By - George W. Crane, Ph. D., M.D. CASE J-540: My economist brother, Dr. John B. Crane, conducted a traveling economics class of college Believe in God 73 per cent students in Europe on one vacation. Most of them were from Iowa Wesleyan college, but some came from Drake university, etc. While in Europe, my brothei mailed me a clipping con cerning the religious beliefs of various countries. Nationality Frenchmen English Dutch Germans Swiss So I am tabulating them by nationality to show the actual poll results obtained by the Institut Francais cT Opinion Publique. ^ Believe in HeU 17 per cent 77 per cent 21 per cent 79 per cent 29 per cent 81 per cent 25 per cent 84 per cent 25 per cent The London Times reprinted this French poll with the ad ditional comment that 60 per cent of Americans have a healthy fear of the Devil. Many people profess to disbelieve in God but when a crisis arrives, they are twins for the atheist who was fishing above Niagara Falls. He and his companion were so engrossed in their sport that they failed to notice their boat had slipped its anchor and was gradually drifting out into the rapid current. When the atheist finally woke up to their danger, he yelled to his comrade, "For God's sake, pull on those oars and get us back to shore." Fortunately, they managed to get back in safety. Then his companion spoke up and asked: "I thought atheists didn't believe in God so why did you call upon God when it looked as if we'd be swept over the falls?" "Well," shrugged the disbeliever, "atheism is O.K. as long as you are in still water, but not when you are caught up in the rapids above Niagara Falls." From the European data, you see that most people believe in Deity, but only about 25 per cent state a similar belief in HeU. Perhaps that percentage would have been much higher if they had been asked if they believed that bad or wicked folks get punished. HeU has long been depicted a fierv lake of burning brimstone where villains scream in agony throughout eternity. That is not in keeping with the Bible's emphasis on God's dynamic code of morality, where mankind is always given another chance. Nor does it do justice to God's forgiveness, for even we human beings don't torture a heinous criminal indefinitely and rejoice in his perpetual screams. Instead, if we employ capital punishment, we end his suf fering as quickly as possible via the gas chamber, the electric chair, hangman's noose, the firing squad or the guillotine! A more dynamic and logical type of HeU would involve the demotion of arch criminals to another inhabited planet, possibly a billion years behind Earth, where dinosaurs keep humans in terror and human sympathy, love and kindliness are but embryonic. When a 4th grade school chUd can't read at the level of his classmates, he is demoted to possibly the 2nd grade. HeU may thus be a Cosmic Classroom inferior to Earth where bad folks are demoted, but allowed a chance to evolve through many reincarnations till they again reach a high ethical code like ours.
