SEPTEMBER 26 Rockford Diocesan Council Of Catholic Women Convention Wonder Weeders! The name denotes a kind of magic which elevates the lowly weed. The name in reality denotes a group of women who are members of the Woman's auxiliary of Memorial Hospital for McHenry County who do indeed work vonders with weeds. Mother Nature provides the raw materials but it takes these gals with their artist's eye and nimble fingers to gather, groom, dry and arrange the thousands of leaves, weeds, and flowers found in garden and glen. The bulk dried weeds which are bundled for sale, as well as the table and wall arrangements which they create, are all being prepared for Holiday Hospitality Day, Wednesday, Oct. 6. The Wonder Weeders this year will be located in the Conference building at Woodstock center. The center is north of Woodstock on Route 14. They invite everyone to come and see their unusual and exotic wares made under the tutelage of chairman, Mrs. William Kelly, a charter member of the auxiliary. Among the arranged pieces will be table and wall arrangements, both large and small, to mark the autumn season and bring the beauty and colors of fall into your home. This year's offerings will include an infinite variety of flowers. The flower bar will feature corn roses, flowers from the sea, Tahitian tuber flowers, artichokes, tree-of- heaven flowers, Fleur-de-lis and dried garden zinnias. Stylized flowers to complement the modern decor will also be available. The Whimsy Corner will be repeated this year with the mushrooms and crested cranes made from unicorn pods. Native roadside and garden materials are used in such different ways as to render them unrecognizable from the original; for example, corn leaves from sweet corn and purple corn bleached and bowed, corn tassels and box elder and maple seeds. Again there will be bundles and packages of hundreds of different materials for one to purchase to fashion her own arrangements. Some of the popular and sought after varieties are blue salvia, green teasel, liatric, yellow garden yarrow and dock in shades of green to medium brown. There is also a great quantity of wheat, many grasses, glycerined golden rod, equisetum, squiggles, gum balls, and artemesia. Unit packages containing a com bination of materials that go well together can be taken home and arranged.
