William Meath recently purchased the McHenry Flour Mill from William Spencer. The McHenry Flour Mill has become a familiar land mark in West McHenry. The mill was built seventy-six years ago in 1870 by Alexander Hanly and after his death his sons, Ben jamin, George and Frank Hanly carried on the operation of the business. In 1906 it was purchat^edoy John Spencer, William Spencer worked in the mill with his father until 1920 when his father retired and William became the owner. The Anthony Audino home in Indian Ridge was full to overflowing over the weekend when forty-five of the em ployees of the firm where he works came out for a big out door picnic. A beautiful early fall wedding was solemnized Sept. 7 in St. B a r t h o l o m e w ' s c h u r c h , Chicago, when Miss Joan Byrne became the bride of Mr. Francis Wirtz. A bon voyage party was held at the Wonder Lake home of Mrs. Joanne Rulien last week honoring Mrs. Betty Nielsen, who has left for Denmark to spend several months visiting relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Dan O'Shea were pleasantly surprised by friends at a house warming held at their new home near Grayslake. Harry Anderson, who has been attending the University of Michigan this summer, will spend several days with relatives here before returning to Michigan to begin his fall course. He is a senior student and will complete his studies in June. They were among McHenry's best known and respected young people and their untimely deaths saddened the hundreds here who were their friends and acquaintances. ^ The Viscounts Drum and Bugle corps won top honors in the National Sons of the Legion contest held in Denver, Colo. In addition they placed highly among junior corps in the open class, even- tho' many were state champions. Besides winning the Sons of the Legion flag, they also placed seventh in the open class, defeating such state champions as Ohio, Oklahoma and Colorado. Tom Carlson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Carlson of Center street, McHenry, won first place with his 1936 Ford in a championship model car contest held in Woodstock. The 13 year old boy defeated a large field of contestants whose ages ranged from 13 to 20. He also received honorable mention for a 1925 Model "T". Mr. and Mrs Wencil Stanek of Spring Grove announce the birth of a son, Sept. 8, at McHenry hospital. PROMOTED - Mrs. Ann Gausden and Sacramento district engineer. Colonel James C. Donovan, pin silver bars to the blouse of Second Lieutenant Michael Gtuaden upon his promotion to first lieutenant recently. Gausden, who is assigned to the Sacramento resident office, keeps a watchful eye on about $5 million worth of construction at McClellan A.F.B. They were joined by Joe and Connie Catanzaro, Ron and Dee Wegener, and Connie and D o n n a K a s p r z y k . A n a n niversary cake that was a surprise was their dessert, and the organist entertained with the "Anniversary Waltz." Later, they celebrated further at the Wegener home. Jack and Marge Connell celebrated their recent an niversary by taking a week's vacation to the North woods in Wisconsin, without the kids. While Marge's mother and father stayed with the family, Marge and Jack enjoyed their week of fishing and just relaxing. LOCAL BOYS ON HIGHSCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY TEAM Roy Maras and Gary Gabriel are members of the McHenry High School Cross Country Team. During a recent meet with several area high schools, Roy placed twelfth, and ran the 2.6 mile in 18.16. Gary was seventeenth, and ran the 2.6 mile distance in 18.54. Keep up the good work. GET-WELL WISHES Marge Krueger is recuperating in the McHenry hospital following an operation for an ulcer condition. Her room number is 206, and she would appreciate hearing from all her friends. This is an especially unhappy and un welcome stay for her, as she and her husband, Frank, were planning to celebrate their twenty-fifth wedding an niversary on Sept. 26 with a trip to Las Vegas. Their trip will have to be postponed, but maybe we can make her stay less miserable by sending her cards of get-well wishes. This outdoor assembly took place around the flag pole. Legion members present were Wilbur Haak, commander of McHenry; Victor Hunt, commander of Post 1169, Wonder Lake; and Bill Beltz, first vice-commander of Post 1169. Auxiliary members of Post 1169 present were Mrs. Marge Hartung, president; Mrs. Marie Benal, chaplain; and Mrs. Lois Haak, treasurer. First Vice-Commander Beltz gave the invocation, the reading of "Your Flag and My Flag". Commander Haak explained the purpose of the presentation. Cheryl Hansen home of Mrs. Bonnie Kellen at 2710 S. Both a car wash and a game day on horses were discussed but nothing definite was decided. McHenry Girl Recognized For Fine Class Work Janet Ann Lucier of 2718 N. Iroquois Trail, McHenry, was among about 5,000 recognized for outstanding class work during the recent semester at the University of Missouri, Columbia, Mo. They are students named by eleven campus divisions which designate honor rolls or deans' lists. Miss Lucier was honored in the home economics division.
