May Ave., Village of Sunnyside, McHenry, 111. 60050. Dated this 5th day of October, A.D. 1971. Vernon W. Kays County Clerk. (Pub. Oct. 8,15 and 22,1971) Observe Employ The Handicapped Week Oct. 3-9 Bcause Oct. 3-9 is National w Employ the Handicapped Week throughout the nation, the Goodwill Industries of northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin is urging local business and industry employers to take a good look at "so called" han dicapped workers when filling job openings. "We ask employers to just give the handicapped worker a chance to show what he can do," commented Norman K. Dasenbrook, executive director of the local Goodwill. 'We urge them to consider employing handicapped persons for present job vacancies, and invite them to come visit Goodwill's facilities and see for themselves just how well- trained and competent our workers are." "Our handicapped people are so well-trained in their respective fields, that we feel they can compete with and often exceed the performance of non-handicapped workers," he added. "We only ask that local business and industry take into consideration the 'ability*, not the 'disability', of the skilled and deserving handicapped persons who could fill jobs in this community." "What is a handicap in one job, of course, may not be a handicap at all in another job", Dasenbrook explained. "A disability requiring con finement to a wheelchair, for example, does not necessarily impair ability to put burrs, do packaging or handle telephone work." "It's been proven beyonf1 doubt," the executive con tinued, "that the handicapped make good employees. They are punctual, hard-working and stay on-the-job because it means so much to them to be working and earning a living. Handicapped individuals want very much to be independent, not dependent,," Dasenbrook pointed out, "and they'll prove it to you, if given a chance."
