Johnson General Manager (Pub. Oct. 13. 15, 1971) -WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 13, 1971 HOMEOWNERS WARNING Illinois Attorney General William J. Scott has warned homeowners to beware of unscrupulous heating and furnace contractors who solicit customers on a door-to-door basis. Scott said that these contractors are particularly active during the fall season when homeowners are preparing for the severe Illinois winter These people operate by offering to inspect the furnace at no cost or to clean it for $10 or $15, Scott explained When they obtain access to the furnace by such means they then tell the homeowner that the furnace is in a dangerous condition, and convince him to sign a contract for expensive repairs, the Attorney General said From The Farm ILLINOIS COOPERATIVE Cooperatives pump about $24 million annually into the pockets of rural Illinois people through patronage refunds and other forms of savings. Bruce Brooks. University of Illinois Extension grain marketing specialist, says that figures out to about $190 per farm based on 1970 statistics. More than 1,000 agricultural cooperatives now are operating in Illinois. That number is exceeded only in California, Iowa and Minnesota. Illinois cooperatives in 1970 numbered 167 farm supply associations, 304 marketing firms and 599 farmer service organizations. Cooperatives account for about 26 percent of the dollar value of Illinois crops and livestock marketed in the state. Cooperatives represent about 71 - percent of the dollar value of all farm expenses incurred in producing crops and livestock on Illinois farms. These ex penses include cost - of feed, fertilizer, seed, petroleum and other supplies and services required by farmers and farm families. Service cooperatives provide credit, electricity, health and other forms of insurance, telephones, animal health care and artificial insemination services for livestock producers. Marketing, service, and supply cooperatives are an important segment of the business community of Illinois and serve more than 700,000 rural and urban residents. PESTICIDE CONTAINERS Disposing of empty pesticide containers can become a problem. Empty containers need to be disposed of safely, since it is almost impossible to remove all of the pesticide from a container Small amounts of pesticides in a container can harm children or animals if they should get into them. You can dispose of empty containers by burying them at least-18 inches deep. Break glass containers completely. Crush metal containers except aerosol cans. You can also dispose of chemical containers in sanitary landfills. Do NOT reuse pesticide or other chemical containers. STORE UNUSED PESTICIDES You can keep unused pesticides and herbicides for use next year if you properly seal and store them in a cool place this winter. Store liquid pesticides in protected areas to prevent damaging containers, freezing or precipitation of the ingredients. Always store pesticides in their original containers. The containers provide iden tification, usage directions, safety precautions and rate recom mendat ions. Unlabeled materials are safety hazards and can lead to mistakes during planting time. Discard all unidentifiable materials. And remember to store chemicals in a safe place where children, irresponsible people and livestock can't get into them.
