Construction On Tollway At Elgin Begins Major construction on the Northwest Tollway at Route 31 and also at the bridge over the Fox river, began Tuesday morning, Oct. 26, at 9 a.m. The work involves the removal of pavement and repair of the backwall on the west side of the northwest structures at the Fox river, near Elgin. In addition, the resurfacing of all ramps at the interchange of the Northwest Tollway at Route 31 will be performed simultaneously. It will be necessary to close several of the ramps for one- day periods during con struction to complete the in stallation of the new pavement. Here & There In BUSINESS Urge GOP Party For Agreement On Patronage System The Responsible Republicans last week urged Republican party leaders to agree with the proposed federal court in junction that will prohibit Democrats from forcing patronage workers to perform political tasks and to make contributions to party coffers against their will. "The Republican party has much to gain from agreeing to abide by these rules," believes Tom Boyle, executive council member of the Responsible Republicans. "There are two basic benefits from agreement," Boyle • continued," (1} since the Republican party has long been the party of the individual, we should welcome the possibility of allowing patronage em ployees to follow their con sciences and support the best candidates running and (2) agreeing with the injunction will remove the threat of losing one's job from Democratic patronage workers in Cook county where election losses are often blamed on forced labor by patronage workers. "It makes good political sense to end the abuses of patronage politics, in addition to being the right thing to do." IN SCHOOL PROGRAM One hundred seventy-six freshmen in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are creating their own academic community within a large university. Among the participants selected from applicants for the new program, called Unit I, are Edward Anderson, 311 N. Mineral Springs, and Vernon Ficken, 4310 W. Crestwood. The first two floors of Allen hall serve as headquarters for the program, providing space for teaching and for faculty offices in addition to living quarters for the students. Men live in one wing and women in another. The program seeks to en courage more active par ticipation by students in their own education.
