American Legion Auxiliary Netvs McHENRY UNIT 491 By Pearl Cooper ' • The meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 491, of Oct. IB, was called to order by the president, Mrs. David Henken. The charter was draped by Mrs. Henken and chaplain, Mrs. Jack Cooper, in memory of departed members, Marge Hiller and Anna * Mcintosh. The following chairmen gave their reports. Americanism chairman, Mrs. Elmer (Pat) Borcovan, announced that the McHenry unit donated fourteen classroom flags, an office flag, as well as an outside flag to the new Parkland school. An outside flag was also given to the West campus high school. Next week the unit will present East campus with an outside flag, and seven classroom flags and an outside flag to Edgebrook school. She also announced that the schools have been notified of the Americanism essay contest. The title of the essay will be "Freedom, Our American Heritage". All members of the auxiliary are asked to attend the Veterans Day program, which will be held Thursday, Nov. 11 at the city park. The program will start at 10:30 a.m. Coupon chairman, Mrs. Kenneth (Jane) Grothman, asked all members to save dog coupons and food labels; the Care box was passed by Foreign Relations chairman, Pat Borcovan, for the country of Kenya; Membership chairman, Mrs. Robert (Marilyn) Miller, announced that 116 members, ninety-six seniors and twenty juniors, have paid their dues and asked all members to please pay their dues by Oct. 31 in order to receive a national citation; Children and Youth chairman, Martha Dignan, asked all members to bring canned goods for the Christmas baskets for the needy to the next meeting-stuffed toys, games, as well as gifts for the hospitalized veterans are also needed. In the absence of Past President's Parley chairman, Ceil Violett, Pearl Cooper told of the unit's past presidents' meeting held at Pearl Sander's home. Eight members attended and hankie were cut for the Elgin patients. All members of the parley are asked to bring gifts for the women patients at Downey hospital. The next meeting of the parley will be held in January at the home of Ann Thennes. President Doris Henken presented Veterans Craft chairman, Betty Lou Smith, with the ribbon award for the unit flag, given to the unit by the department president, Angie Powell, at the district convention held in September. Representativei D Of Helping Paws At Fall Workshop Representatives of Helping Paws Animal Welfare association will travel to Chicago Friday, Oct. 29, to attend a session of the Humane Society of the United States workshop on leadership development. The workshop will be held at the LaSalle hotel Oct. 29, 30 and 31. A varied program of interest to all of those concerned with animal welfare is being presented. . Representing Helping Paws at the convention will be Carol Wilyat, Mary Sigo, Karen Boettcher and Carla Bennett of Algonquin. The four will hear Miss Phyllis Wright, executive director of the < National Humane Education center, speak on cruelty investigations and on establishing spay clinics, both municipal and private.
