HELPING PAWS by Carol Wilyat Picture here is just one reason why members of Helping Paws Animal Welfare association stress to pet owners the importance of preventing breeding which leads to un wanted litters of pups or kit tens. This emaciated little pup is one of a litter of six part Dalmation puppies found in sadly neglected condition on a farm. They were gladly given up by their owner, who stated that he was going to kill the pups if no one took them. All of the dogs were suffering from malnutrition and were ex tremely bloated and ill from internal parasites. The puppies, too weak to stand when taken into custody by Helping Paws, are now thriving on a diet of canned baby formula, powdered puppy vitamins, and dog food. They have been treated for parasites by a veterinarian. Helping Paws urges all prospective pet owners to consider carefully all disad vantages, as well as ad vantages, before acquiring a cat or dog. The expense of maintaining a pet in healthy condition can certainly be considered a disadvantage of pet ownership. Only those can afford necessary shots and routine, as well as emergency veterinarian care, should consider acquiring an animal. One of the purposes of Helping Paws is to educate the public to prevent unwanted puppies and kittens and to accept responsibility for pets already owned. Members of this animal welfare organization hope that by so doing, near-tragedies such as these puppies will no longer occur. The following has been quoted from a pamphlet en titled, "How to take care of Pets" by Kay's Animal Shelter, Inc. "Animal care is simply applied common sense and thoughtfulness. Pets need fresh air; light, sunshine, exercise, clean beds, and nourishing food. They need your protec tion, your affection and your considerate training. "An ideal owner is one with a sense of humor, stability and the philosophy that the pet has been acquired 'for better or for worse'. Whether it shall be for better or for worse is entirely up to the owner. Your pet is what you take time to make him. "If you get a puppy or kitten, he must be reared and will require extra care, feeding and supervision; whereas grown animals' habits are already established and may or may not suit you. Feed and care for the animal properly and you will find at the end of five or six weeks that the animal will try to please you and will be willing to accept your training." These pets are up for adoption this week for a small donation: Kittens, all colors, from 4 weeks, with blue eyes, to 8 weeks, male and female, call 459-0511.
