EARL WALSH So I Hear ^*jL_sports editorj Indio, California October 24, 1971 Dear Earl: No doubt you expected to hear from me this year. Last year I didn't have the nerve because I really thought we were lucky to win. But this year you were the lucky ones. (?) Of course I'll admit I was not very optimistic about our chances, since we had not shown that we could win, however that game with you is always a big challenge, and this time they were up to it, even at South Bend. I was at a convention in Sacramento so didn't get to see or even hear the game but Los Angeles is so happy that I will get to see it all in replay on TV tonite. At 11:00 p.m. no less. I hope I can stay awake. Hope all is well with you and the family and better luck next year. For USC of course! Sincerely, Meandering Mary McHenry Senior Citizens Club Kitchen Band was presenting "Songs We Can't Forget" at 7:30. About that time it seemed like nothing short of a derrick could get us out of our chair, but up we got -and are we glad! whacked two pot covers together. John and Julia Phalin's daughters, Eleanor, Edna and Ruth were there with Genevieve Knox and one of McHenry's favorite daughters, Maggie Ward. Maggie told of hitching rides on farmers' milk wagons to get her out to Irish Prairie-. where she taught school. 'Twas great fun -- and our chair was waiting when we arrived home. If you haven't seen that group perform, you have missed something. Their leader, Dolly Mazzarella, is a good one. So are the accompanists, Lucille Deitz and Eleanor Crawford. Lots of talent in that group. The high spot in every number was when Ray Murphy As Fred Meyer and Yours Truly left the McHenry Country Club Tuesday after lunch (we found a live one), Bill Pries came up to tell us about his new residence in Florida. Says Bill, "I almost caught a big fish the other day -- a 150 pounder - You wonder how I could tell its weight? -- it had a scale on its back." We decided that change of climate hasn't done a thing to change Bill. THEY CATCH 'EM plenty bigggg down Arkansas way. Shown above is Lois M. Gaylord of * Edmund, Oklahoma with her 29 and one - half inch, eight and one - quarter pound Walleye Pike, caught Oct. 8 on Bull Shoals Lake out of Norma and Verne Thompson's Triple "K' Resort at Peel, Arkansas. The Thompsons are formerly of McHenry and known to many in this area. Dear Mary: Yep. Your letter was ex pected. Would have been real disappointed if you had just let us stew in our own juice. You could have won a buck or two from us on the game this year. Found out that you have a couple of good quarterbacks. We could use one of them. Notre Dafne has been known for top quarterbacks but the crop this year needs more experience. Sports fans will learn some day that this game of football is fickle. Just when the Illini alumni made ready to fire the new coach, he rares up and leads his team to a decisive victory over Purdue. Purdue had sights set on visiting your state for the Rose Bowl. Enjoyed your enclosure picturing your residence in Bermuda Palms Mobile Estates. Beautiful! Nice to hear from you, Meandering Mary. Like we White Sox fans said for years -- "Wait 'til next year." Best Wishes, "S.I.H." Just as we were ensconced in our easy chair after the usual light evening meal Monday night Mom recalled that the DIVISIONS: 4th grade, % mile - Ribbons to the first 15; 5th grade, :U Mile - Ribbons to the first 15; 6th grade, One mile - Ribbons to the first 15; 7th grade, one and a half miles - Ribbons to the 15; 8th grade, one and a half miles - Ribbons to the first 15. BE A WINNER !!! Pat Goffo of Antioch, formerly of Chapel Hill Country Club, McHenry received a citation from the F ort Lauderdale Fishing Festival, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for a Sailfish, 6 ft. 6" long - which she caught and landed Oct. 16 near Fort Lauderdale.
