Twice Told Tales FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Nov. 19, 1931) Charles B. Harmsen, clerk of the town of McHenry, passed away at his home in McHenry Nov. 12, at the age of sixty-five after an illness of several months. He had served in the office of township clerk for twenty-eight years and had been a member of the board of education of the McHenry grade school for about twelve years. A pretty autumn wedding was solemnized at St. Peter's church, Spring Grove, Nov. 18, when Miss Marcella Hergott became the bride of Mr. Ed­ ward P. Diedrich of Johnsburg. Miss Frances Steinsdoerfer of Chicago is building a beautiful modern home on Rand Road at Lily Lake. Stephen H. Freund of McHenry is the contractor. The Ladies Aid society is collecting clothing which will be sent to the poor people through the Halsted street institutional church in Chicago. A reunion of the McGee family and also observance of the birthdays of five members of the family which all occur within a week was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E.R. Sutton. Miss Magdalina Grasser of West McHenry and Mr. James D. Curran of Grayslake were married at the home of Father Nix, Nov. 17. Mrs. Ray McGee, Mrs. George Phalin, Clara Miller and Florence Carey attended the Mariola Merry Go Round bridge party at Wood­ stock. Warren Westermeir, 14 years old, of Chicago, accidentally shot himself as he was entering his mother's car at Slocum's Lake and badly injured his left hip. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Nov. 21, 1946) Edward Murphy of this city was elected to the presidency of the debating society at Loyola university at a recent meeting. Monica, daugher of the Harold Phalins, suffered a broken elbow in a fall from a swing in the basement of their home. Lyle Franzen of Spring Grove was chosen to be the director of the play "Will O' the Wisp" by Doris Halman to be presented Dec. 7, by the Blackburn players at Blackburn college, Carlinville. Lawrence Duchow's Red Raven Victor Recording or­ chestra will be at Nell's Ballroom, Johnsburg, Nov. 28, •for a Thanksgiving day dance. The co-ops will start two fine teams in basketball games Sunday night. Players are all former MCHS performers. The two local teams are so evenly matched the coaches call them "A" and "B" teams in place of first and second. On the "A" roster we find the following named, Leroy Smith, George Jackson, "Erz" Laures, Glen Peterson, Joe Jackson, Don Meyer, Don Howard and Bill Bolger. Team "B" will start a lineup from the following, Tom Bolger, Bob Frett, Art Jackson, Gerald Miller, "Dukes" Knox, Dick Conway, Ray Smith and "Bud" Miller. Mrs. C.W. Goodell and Warren Jones attended a concert given by the celebrated pianist, Samuel Sorin, at the University church in Elgin. Following the concert, Mrs. Milton Jacobs entertained fourteen guests at her lovely home with Mr. Sorin as guest of honor. During the evening Warren favored the group with several vocal selections ac­ companied by Mrs. Goodell. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Nov. 21, 1961) Zelinda Bennett of McHenry was among students in the department of physical education for women at the University of Illinois who at­ tended the state convention of the tllinois association for health, physical education and recreation held in Peoria. Robert C. Newkirk of McHenry recently inspected a giant vibrating screen in Milwaukee, Wis.,»which will be shipped for installation at St. Paul dock in the seaport of Vitoria, Brazil. More than 1,100 tons of iron ore per hour will be sized in this giant screen which will join three others and three crushers located inland at an iron ore reclamation plant. The inspection by Newkirk was made for the Stephens- Adamson Mfg. Co., in Aurora. Emil H. Wolf, 79, of Front street, McHenry, for many years, died Nov. 16. Earl W. Hendrickson of Rich­ mond observed his thirty-fifth anniversary with Public Ser­ vice company on Nov. 15. Hendrickson has spent his career in the company's line department. The Gaye-Wend beauty salon at Wonder Lake center will hold grand opening Sunday, Nov. 26, with open house. Rainbow cleaners, Front street, has undergone a com­ plete remodelling and there has also been an addition on the front of the building to ac­ commodate an office for a new service machinery sales and engineering. Dr. Robert G. Addison has joined the professional ranks in McHenry ecoming associated with McHenry Medical group in the department of orthopedic surgery. Invite MCHS Students To Career Seminar Students from McHenry schools have been invited to attend the Chemistry Career seminar to be sponsored by the Chemical Industries Council- Midwest Friday, Jan. 7, at the Pick-Congress hotel, Chicago. The seminar will feature person-to-person counseling by men and women from chemical and pharmaceutical companies in the Chicago area. The men will outline the requirements for a career in chemistry, or a career in allied fields where a chemical background would be helpful, and will cover all major career areas. Representatives from Chicago area colleges and universities will counsel students on educational requirements. Over 600 students from Chicago area public, private and parochial schools are expected to attend the seminar.
