X t POETS CORNER The following poem was submitted by Maymie Owen of Decatur, Ga., sister of Estelle H. Baldwin of McHenry, also a poet. "CHRISTMAS BELLS" Christmas Bells, I thought I heard you ringing Christmas Bells, I thought I heard you chime --- But when I looked into the "Tall Stately Steeple" T was Golden Bells ringing all the time. Peace pn Earth chimed the Bells of Heaven Hung by God's Angels Divine Silver, or Golden Bells makes no difference, As they ring in your heart and mine. Another year marks the Birthday of Jesus When the bells chime the story anew -- Hark! as they bring all mankind a message Each Bell is now ringing for you. As you list to the peal of their music Let each note enter into your heart Heed! the Glad Tidings God sent us (In Jesus) As the echoes sound and depart. Christmas Deliveries By Surprise Unordered merchandise in the mail causes many problems, especially during the Christmas season. Many consumers don't know what obligations are attached to such unordered merchandise. Pilot Escapes Injury After Plane Is Grounded Saturday afternoon about 2 o'clock, deputies were called to investigate a plane crash near Dacy airport in Harvard. The pilot, John W. Pohlman of 932 ^Hillside drive, Island Lake, was the only occupant of the aircraft. In attempting a landing at the airport, he realized he would be unable to do so because of too high an altitude He increased the throttle to gain altitude for another approach when the engine failed and the craft touched down in a field. There it proceeded through two barbed wire fences before coming to rest in a plowed field, where it nosed down. The pilot escaped injury and the plane received only minor damage in the mishap. TvT Legalfy . you have no obligation concerning unor dered merchandise, says Pat Sullivan, McHenry County Extension Adviser. You need not pay for it, nor return it, and the company can't force you to take either course of action. Although you have no legal obligation, the best thing to do with such packages is to mark "refused" on the cover and return the packages to the post office. The company sending the merchandise will then have to pay return postage and your name will probably be taken off their mailing list. However, if you open the package, you have officially accepted it, according to the post office. In such instances you must pay the postage if you decide to return the package. So check the package before you open it. P o s t a l r e g u l a t i o n s specifically prohibit the sen ding of unordered packages COD. or by insured mail. There are no laws against the mailing of unordered mer chandise. If you receive unordered COD. packages, notify your postmaster so that the postal inspectors can in vestigate.
