At a recent school board meeting, the teachers at Harrison school in Wonder Lake presented a program on "How Your Child Learns to Read." Parents of Harrison students were invited to come and given an opportunity to ask questions afterward. The teachers began by passing out a "Pfimer for Parents". The idea was to put parents in a first graders' place. It was quite effective, as symbols were used instead of the familiar alphabet, and they were just avstrange as the alphabet is, to a beginning reader. This gave an op­ portunity to understand and appreciate what the teacher faces in teaching children to read. In kindergarten, children are taught to work with other children, color consciousness, left to right progression, and to observe. All of this is a preliminary to reading. In first grade, reading readiness consists of practicing left to right progression, "reading" across and down, recognizing likes and dif­ ferences in shapes, and lear­ ning to listen. "Now We Read" by Scott-Forsman is their first reader. It is a sight approach to reading and phonics are sup­ plemented. Harrison children are also helped in the classroom by the use of records and earphones, the Language Master, a "talking" machine. A child places a card with a word on it into the machine, and as the child is looking at that word, the machine "says" the word three times. They also tape record and listen to themselves read. In second grade, the children are grouped according to abilities determined by test results and maturity. They will be split among the three second grades in either the Slow, Average, or Accelerated groups. The Slow group uses the Sullivan system, which builds the child's confidence in his own ability. They have grown toward in­ dependence from their teacher and can make use of such learning aids as indiviual film strip viewers and cassettes. In third grade they are trying to bring the reading vocabulary up to the child's speaking vocabulary. Comprehension in reading and understanding are the goals. In fourth grade, there are also three groups. In the Slow group, the objective is to pin­ point what each particular child has missed and work on that.The Average group is progressing at fourth grade level satisfactorily and allowed such privileges as using cassettes and taping stories For the Advanced group; reading changes. The teacher no longer reads directions and the child works on his own. They learn to use an index, the dictionary, meanings of ab­ breviations, reading symbols as in science and on maps. In fourth grade the reading vocabulary passes the speaking and writing vocabulary. Federal Judge Doherty, who issued the original restraint has modified that order permitting IPSA to sell its stamps for other uses than "Christmas cards or letters."
