In June the Empire theatre was taken over by new management being leased by Messrs. Rosing, Miller and Swanson of Antioch and many im­ provements were made. A new modern talking equipment was installed with the fines* projection and much work was done on the picture equipment. Jacob Stock, a McHenry boy, who has been in Chicago for the past few years, has completed three very beautiful pencil ^sketches which he will exhibit at the world's fair, Century of Progress, in Chicago, 1933. M.A. Conway has been confined to his home this week owing to an accident Saturday when he was crowded and crushed against the side of the barn by a horse. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 12, 1946) Henry C. Arch, 77, a pioneer resident of Pistakee Bay died Dec. 10. For forty years he was a stone contractor in River Forest. Election of officers of the local P.M.A. was held at the parochial school hall in McHenry on Saturday evening. Elected to serve for the next year were Nels Pearson, president, Thomas Thonneson, vice-president, Paul Doherty, secretary and treasurer, John Lindsay^iand Peter A. Since the death of Frank Sampson, his son, Marshall, and Edward Lannes have taken over complete control of the business owned and operated by him. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 14, 1961) A crowd of about 4,000 people lined the streets to view McHenry's first Christmas parade " last Sunday, The parade led by the Viscounts, state and national winning drum and bugle corps in Sons of the Legion competition this past season, a series of beautiful floats followed. Also attracting attention for their stirring music were the Red Devils drum and bugle corps of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the McHenry high school band. While the huge sleigh carrying Santa Claus and Mrs. Santa Claus led by their large reindeer held most interest for the little ones. The parade was sponsored by the McHenry Chamber of Commerce. The condition of Raymond Kennebeck remains unchanged in Michael Reese hospital, Chicago, this week. The McHenry man, father of five children, was seriously injured when a scaffolding fell on him as he wag working on the ground on a job at Arlington Heights. Meyers spoke to all Hilltop students as part of the Sheriff's Program of Safety Education. guests and members at the December meeting of the McHenry Woman's club held at the Methodist church. All third, fourth and fifth graders in the McHenry area schools are receiving holiday issues of the Junior Fire Marshal magazine and special safety tags under a program sponsored annually by the Hartford Insurance Co., distributed by the Pollock Company of McHenry. LICENSE DELIVERIES Substantially more than twice as many motor vehicle license plates were on their way to Illinois motorists by Dec. 1 this year than at any time in the past, Secretary of State John W. Lewis said. On that date, 647,000 sets of plates had been mailed, as compared with 298,000 at the same time a year ago, an increase of 349,000, he said. The truest indication of an educated person seems to be not as much his (her) knowledge or experience, but in the ability to relate these to daily problems and ex­ periences. Veterinarian Department Joins Board Of Health The McHenry County Board of Health is pleased to an­ nounce that effective Dec. 1, the County Veterinarian and Rabies Control department is a section of the McHenry County Department of Health. Dr. Johnson and his staff are most welcome additions to the staff of the Health department and it is believed that their presence will add considerably to the overall effectiveness of protecting the health of the public in McHenry county. The addition of Dr. Johnson to the Health department staff will make it possible to more effectively resolve most public health problems which involve animals and animal products and their relationship to humans. By virture of the veterinarian training, Dr. Johnson will make more complete the medical talents and services of the County Health department. As a part of the Health department, Dr. Johnson will be able to be more readily involved in the veterinary medical con­ sultation to the Health Officer and the Public Health staff. Other areas of endeavor which can be more effectively done by the Veterinarian being a portion of the Health department are: 1. Defining and evaluating animal-human disease dangers and problems. „ 2. The investigation of animal sources of human disease. 3. The development and administration of programs for prevention of rabies, psit­ tacosis, leptospirosis, ringworm and other diseases directly transmissible from animals to man. 4. The Veterinarian will be able to assist in programs for preventing food borne illness and other diseases indirectly transmissible to man through the animal product and of protecting the wholesomeness and nutritive value of animal Food Products. 5. Public education in diseases transmissible to man from animals and animal products and in the measures and programs to be observed in the prevention of such diseases. 6. Coordination of public health, human medical and veterinary medical efforts and programs toward efficient protection of animal and human health.
