The family now resides in Mundelein. BROWNIE-JUNIOR GIRL SCOUT CHRISTMAS PARTY Brownie Troop 409 and Junior Troop 478 held their Christmas party, Friday night, Dec. 17, at the Kellen home. The original plans included caroling, but the weather turned bitter cold. But everything turned out well anyway. The girls exchanged grab bag gifts, and played a game. The biggest treat of all, especially for some of the Brownies, was the arrival of Santa Claus, who did the passing out of the gifts to the girls. He stayed around awhile, but had to leave to continue his toymaking for Christmas. The girls would like to thank the ladies who made cookies, and an especially big thanks to Mrs. Karlic who volunteered and made individual cookie packets for each scout. Dee Wegener and Donna Kasprzyk assisted leaders Bonnie Kellen and Jackie Carbone. By order of the mayor and members of the city council of McHenry Saturday, Dec. 13, is to be specially observed by the displaying of flags in all public places and private homes in honor of the one hundredth birthday of a citizen, Mrs. Samantha Button, only living mother of a civil war veteran. Miss Marjorie Whiting of Ringwood attended a school of instructions at Batavia on Thursday for the Fidelity Life association. The McHenry County Business and Professional Women's club held its meeting at Justen's hotel in McHenry Monday evening. Thirty-seven women were present to enjoy the delicious chicken dinner and the teachers of the McHenry schools were guests of the evening. A solo was given by Bob Peterson. The chicken dinner and bazaar held at the M.E. church under the auspices of the ladies aid society was a grand suc cess. The quilt top on which sealed bias were taken went to Mrs. Fred Ferwerda. This quilt was made and donated by Mrs. Otto Johnson. The Cinderella Ball spon sored by the Juniors took place Saturday evening at the McHenry high school gym. The gym was decorated by the girls with a carriage on one side and other things such as a fireplace, brooms and a scrub pail. The big event of the evening was when the Prince Charming and Cinderella waltzed around the floor with their attendants. The Prince Charming was Robert L. Freund and his Cinderella was Elaine Nell. The at tendants were Margaret Bolger and Larry Haug, Nancy Cristy and Tom Kent. John and Daniel Cooney returned recently to Grand Forks, N.D., after spending some time with the^ parents, Mr and Mrs. Martin Cooney. TfcN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 14, 1961) « Walter Foreman of Holiday Hills was kicked, struck on the head and then robbed of $750 shortly after he opened his service station at Northwest highway and Quentin road at Palatine early Monday mor ning. The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Deterding of McHenry was christened Roger Frederick in a baptismal service at Zion Evangelican Lutheran church, Dec. 10. Robert W. Smith of Orchard Drive, McCullom Lake, passed away Dec. 10 at the age of 53 after an illness of four years. Funeral services were held on Saturday for Lars Chris Thompson, 63, of Grayslake, husband of the former Norma Whiting of McHenry, who was electrocuted at work on Dec. 6. Gregg Peters, radar man third class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin A. Peters, Trey road, McHenry, was recently promoted while serving aboard the destroyer leader USS Norfolk, enroute home from South America after a four month cruise in Latin American waters. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Loser have moved from Waukegan street to a new home in Edgebrook. SPIRIT OF GIVING -- In keeping with the Christmas spirit of giving, the Valley View fourth graders joined in the efforts of the McHenry American Legion post in collecting non-perishable food to pack in baskets for less fortunate families. The goods collected by the Valley View students was combined with that collected by the American Legion and distributed Sunday morning, Dec. 19. TREE DECORATING CEREMONY - Youngsters of the residents in LeVilla Vaupell Country club took part in the annual Christmas tree decorating ceremony Sunday, Dec. 18. An open fire, hot chocolate and doughnuts added to the excitement before the arrival of Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus. Ornaments made by the children were placed on the tree.
