V •s Wonder Lake Mary Jean Huff PAGE5-PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 29, 197] 653-9167 Remind Chtdren The Danger Of Rock Throwing If you drive along the streets of Wonder Lake in the early morn you'll see kids waiting on the corners for their school buses and you can almost count on seeing a few of them scrapping at each bus stop. Boys will be boys, as we all know. However, I received a phone call from a mother whose daughter was hit by a rock thrown by one of these bus wafting boys. The rock hit the rim ot tne gins glasses and they fell to the ground and shat tered. Another Vfe inch and it may have hit the glass itself, which in turn could have broken into the girl's eyes resulting in severe eye injuries and perhaps even blindness. It is often difficult for us as parents to know what our children do at the bus stops, as most of them are out of eyesight from our homes. But perhaps this incident provides an opportunity for us to remind our young ones (and the older ones, too) of the dangers and tragedies that could result from rock throwing. UNUSUAL PRESENTS We heard of a couple of unusual Christmas presents this year. Our hard working Uncle Ralph Larsen probably got the biggest present we know of - one of those new fangled, closed in tractors with the air conditioning and the Whole bit. Auntie Jo swore she was gonna put a big red ribbon on it and set it out on the front yard for all passersby to see. And then there's a swinging grandma and grandpa in Crystal Lake who got a bicycle built for two. How about you? Did you get something unusual? Give me a call and we'll share the fun with the readers. FIRST CHRISTMAS Happy first birthday to little Kimberly Ann Jones, daughter of Don and Toni Jones. Kim blows out that one big candle pn Dec. 29. PEACE And for the coming New Year, we wish you - PEACE. I ENTERTAIN PARENTS - Parents were entertained Dec. 14 at the Valley View Christmas program which featured the second and third graders and Mrs. McCracken's room in a holiday music presentation. The "seven dwarfs" of the fifth grade were also on the program. Interstate highways are three times safer than other highways. But interstate drivers are another story. The rapidly expanding in-* terstate system in Illinois and throughout the United States could be "virtually accident- free. But a new breed of drivers with potentially dangerous habits has developed. According to a recent sudy, "Interstate Man" sets out on a trip knowing where he's going and generally how he's going to get there. But he seldom decides in advance what he'll do along the way. The study shows that the average, interstate driver covers more than 500 miles each day. Most traffic safety experts recommend 400 miles as the maximum distance to cover in one day. Long hours of constant high speed driving and the fact that most interstate drivers don't expect anything to happen leads to loss of sensitivity and slower reactions. Unfamiliarity leads to un certainty and indecision -- or even worse, the last-minute decision. Ifointerstate traveling is included in your holiday plans, then plan your entire trip before you start. Good wood posts very often outlast steel ones. n -- i R >vm1 jy ji w ^ .. .just for saving with McHenry Savings Receive one of these beautiful blankets, Free, by depositing $300, $5,000 or $10,000 in a new account or certificate, or in your present account at McHenry Savings.
