Greg Schumacher ( L) manager of Pros Inc., makes the final plans for the game with Gary Gough and Chris Bennett of Company 1. The Friday night action will begin at N p.m. The members of the Bears will autograph proems for the young fans following the game. Watch the Plaindealer sports page for more information. PLAINDEALER PHOTO Received our first White Sox bulletin of the year and things are looking good. No word from the Cub front office. Must ask them again to put us on their mailing list. Before we know it great stories will be coming out of training camps. For a while it will seem like a batch of rookies are going to run the veterans back to the farm. EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR Young Grapplers Have A Bright Future McHenry Hockey League* By Fred Kusch MCHS Frosh wrestling squad perhaps has the finest potential of any wrestling squad in recent years There are many fine individuals competing on the Frosh level, among them are Joe Dougherty, Ken Zeller, Bob Eppel, Steve Lane, Mike Moreale. Dave Kroncke, Paul Antonov, Darrell Seliga, Rick Bender and Rich Lewey. In the Grayslake Holiday Tourney the Warriors finished second in a 8 team field behind Antioch/H.S Lane, Eppel and Dougherty took 1st place medals; Morreale, Antonov, and Seliga 2nd place medals; and Kron cke, Bender and Lewe^ 4th place winners The Warriors piled up 82 team points with their efforts. At the 16 team Barrington Tourney, held Dec. 28-29, Ken Zeller and Joe Dougherty made the best showing ever by a Warrior in the tourney as they captured first places in their respective weight classes. Come out and see your favorite Warrior team in action. As of this writing, the freeze has finally arrived and the ice is finally solid. During this last week there have been many '"people going on the ice when it was only half frozen and falling through even though they were told to stay off. Consequently, the ice is now frozen with chunks of ice sticking up all over. Of course it's not easy to skate on rough ice. The ice was covered with another layer of ice on Tuesday. If the ice doesn't turn out to be as smooth as it should be, you can thank the few who were out there breaking it up. This Saturday, Jan. 8, starting at 8:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. All members from 15 through 18 will have^fr5 practice session. FrorrTMl:15 to 2 p.m. all members 9 through 12 will have their session. Sunday morning from 8:30 a.m. until 11:15 a.m. there will be a game scheduled. From 11:15 to 2 p.m. all members 13 and 15 years old will have the ice. Then Sunday night from 6:30 until 10:30 the seniors will have the ice. This is going to be the basic schedule from now on. The league will be using the ice on Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. and Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights from 6:30 until 10:30. Each team will be ad vised when the ice will be available to them after this weekend. Last week I asked for people to help coach the teams. The response was tremendous. I didn't receive one pl)one call. We still need coaches! See everyone at the rink Saturday and Sunday. Think ice!! Sat. Jan. 8, 8:30 -11:15 a.m. - ages, 15 through 18. Sat. Jan. 8, 11:15 - 2 p.m. - ^ages 9 through 12. Sun. Jan. 9, 8:30-11:15 a.m, - ages 15 through 18 game. Sun. Jan. 9, 11:15 a.m. - 2 p.m. - ages 13 and 14. Sun. Jan. 9, 6:30 - 10:30 p.m. - Seniors. Then, like the story goes, some rookie will send a wire, "Am coming home, Ma. They started throwing curves." But, let's not get too far ahead of the season On Friday night of this week our Varsity and Soph basketball teams travel to Woodstock. The following week North Chicago comes here. Coaches won't want the boys to be looking ahead to the North Chicago game. Take Wood stock first. We never saw McHenry have an easy game on the Blue Streak floor. The Freshman cagers will play at Woodstock Saturday morning - 9 o'clock. They will have to eat an early breakfast. Woodstock's Varsity wrestlers will come to Warrior camp Friday night. McHenry doesn't seem too strong at some weights, but keep the faith. There are some good ones coming up. In fact, we have some top ones on the varsity this year. One sport that needs more attention is swimming. The next home splash for Coach Mike Shanahan's boys is Jan. 19 vs. Harlem - 4:30 p.m. NOTE TO THAT BARBER - We threw out the bait (free Every Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday the rink is reserved for Hockey League from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Martin J. Kinnerk haircut), but nobody took the hook on your plea for, hockey tickets. No news on the Bears new coach. Players seem to be singing -- "Won't you come home Bill Dooley." Had "Red" Winkel and Frank Freund in our office at the same time this week. They played baseball together at Johnsburg back in prohibition days. We kept score for them. Naturally^ talk got around fast to baseball - and prohibition brew. There was plenty of action in both departments. They were recalling the visit of the White Sox to Johnsburg. It must have been about 1930. The Sox beat the Frett team, but the Old Timers laughingly decided they should have had the party first, then the ball game. Let's not kick about this cold weather. The ice skaters are happy. City officials built a new area for regular skaters, then found the weather too mild to flood it. Plans are now under way to correct the problem next year. Be patient. You have heard of the best laid plans of mice and men. C D. of A. I guess the last two weeks I should have sent the Plain- dealer two words for the c o l u m n , ' ' G O N E SNOWMOBILING", for that is exactly what we did over the Christmas-New Year holidays. We snowmobiled the Boulder Junction-Sayner area one week and the Wisconsin Rapids area the next. When we got home the odmeter indicated we had snowmobiled 270 miles. Driving my own machine tliis year that meant an awful lot of aching bones and many soakings in a hot tub, but I loved every minute of it and would start out again tomorrow if someone said "Let's Go Snowmobilir«." While driving up to Boulder Junction, Wise., almost every other car was trailering a machine heading North. Even as far as Wausau snow con ditions were only fair. We had 18 inches when we arrived and it was like white gold. The Northern part of Wisconsin is one of the most beautiful areas for snownlobiling. We did most of our riding oh the "Highland Trail". To describe the majestic pines, forests and beauty these trails took us through would be impossible, especially after a light snow when everything looked like a hand painted picture. To sit along a trail resting and watch a deer or two romping in the snow, it's peaceful and beautiful. St. Germain, Woodruff, is ideal with trails leading to all. It's a 310 mile trip and took us about 6 hours but worth every minute of it. Besides the Northern Highland Trail, they have the East Boundary Trail, High Lake Trail, Manitowish Waters-3^rail, Lower Gresham Trail and the Nexon Rd. Trail. A nice day's ride is on the Lower Gresham Trail. Snowmobile maps are put out by the Boulder Junction Snowmobile club and the Chamber of Commerce. Trails are graded twice a week very well marked and each trail on the map is a different color corresponding with the markers on the trail. Our next trip was up to Wisconsin Rapids, Wise. By this time Southern Wisconsin had a good snow fall and snowmobiling was fair to good from Madison North. Wisconsin Dells area had about 5 inches with slightly more North. The Rapids had about 7 inches. The Wisconsin Rapids area is about a 34 hour drive. As I said a couple weeks ago the Wisconsin Dells is going aU out for winter, for both skiers and snowmobilers. If you missed it there is a toll free number you can call for snow conditions, trail maps and ac commodations in the Dells area. Just dial 800-356-8005. If you call after 5 you will receive a recording of snow conditions, otherwise the Dells Chamber of Commerce will answer.* To receive a trail map of Mirror Lake State Park write to the Department of Natural Resources, Box 450, Madison, Wise. They also have a guide j book for snowmobiling areas in Wisconsin with trail maps in it. Races coming up in the near future are the Big Eagle River Derby Jan. 20-23 which will attract about 40,000 people. If you plan on going up make reservations now for rooms are filled for 50 miles around. | The Hodag "50" is set for Jan. 14-16 in Rhinelander. Let's not forget the Snowmobile Derby sponsored by the Polar Pairs snowmobile club at Rudolph's Breezy Lawn Farm in Spring Grove on Jan. 9 starting at 10 a.m. Earl Nelson member of the IASC reports that there is a 90 mile snowmobile trail running along the Hennepin Canal in the Rock Falls Area at the western end of Illinois. More in formation will be available at a later date. Well, readers if our luck holds up perhaps we wiU be able to snowmobile in our own area soon.
