Continuity With Progress Robert Putnam, principal of Parkland school, has the very difficult task of linking the past with the future. He must constantly evaluate the progressive movement in his school in tefms of student growth, teacher commitment and community acceptance. Mr. Putnam had to face a multitude of changes this year, not only in building design, but also in making the instructional program effective and efficient. He is being recognized by the district for his ability to suc cessfully meet the challenges that have confronted him. State Hospital Slated For Five Major Projects Th Illinois Division of Ar chitecture and Engineering is presently working on plans for five major capital im provement projects, estimated to cost $881,000, to be started at Elgin State hospital. According to Paul Hogan, chief engineer of the local facility, the money was allocated as part of the hospital's record $18,100,000 budget for fiscal 1972 which began last July 1. Hogan enumerated the five projects as $285,000 for new roofs for ten existing patient residences; $150,000^ for rehabilitation of toilets, showers and washroom facilities, in five residential buildings; $231,000 for a new automatic fire alarm system; $130,000 to continue the hospital's demolition program and $85,000 to complete con version of the heat and power plant boilers from coal. The first project will change the roofs of the residence buildings from black slate to a much cooler, heat-reflective white asphalt. The washroom rehabilitation will include the construction of partitions and shower stalls to provide more adequate, modern and private facilities. The automatic fire alarm system will connect every ESH residence back to the hospital's own fire station. Demolition projects being planned for the near future include Dix and Brooks residence halls, Dewey dining room and the annex building, second largest and oldest structure on the hospital campus. The final project will convert one remaining coal boiler in the hospital's power plant to a gas-oil combination, plus converting 1 gas boiler to the same dual-fuel capacity. Although not yet ready for bidding, Hogan anticipates the projects will be started within the next several months.
