(PLAINDEALER PHOTO) Chick Evans college scholarships for the 1972-73 school year have been awarded by the Western Golf Association to 33 outstanding Chicago area boys. Among the group is Michael J. O'Donnell, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed O'Donnell, 209 Grove Street, Woodstock. McHenry's Mr. and Mrs. Jin\ Curran are proud grandparents. Mike is a senior at Marian Central Catholic High School. Caddied at the Woodstock Country Club. The awards announced today by George M. Bard, president of WGA.are among some 240 scholarships to be made on a national basis this winter by WGA's Evans Scholars Foundation. About 35 more also will be made in the Chicago area at a later date. The new Evans Scholars bring to 3,179 the number of former caddies whd have received scholarship since this program was initiated by famed amateur golfer Chick Evans, of Chicago, in 1930. Each scholarship covers full tuition and housing and is renewable for four years. Its value ranges from $3,500 to $7,500. The program is supported by the contributions of some 85,000 - golfers , including about 23,000 in the metropolitan Chicago area. To qualify for a scholarship, each boy caddied at least two years, ranked in the upper 25 percent of his high school class and required financial aid to attend college. The scholarships were awarded on a competitive basis, using these factors. The 33 new award winners will be attending the following universities next fall: Illinois (15), Northwestern (8) Marquette (8) Michigan (1) and Michigan State (1). These are among the 12 universities where the Evans Scholars live in Chapter Houses maintained by the Foundation. These Chapters have an ex ceptional scholastic rating on every campus and are among the leaders in both intramural sports and extra - curricular activities. Through their elected of ficers, the Evans Scholars manage the Chapter* Houses and conduct a full scale organizational program. An Evans Chapter differs from a social frateplity in that no meals are served in any of the Houses. The majority of the Evans Scholars work for their meals in nearby campus dining rooms. Mike O'Donnell will be 18 in April. He ranks First in his class at Marian Central. He played football and baseball at Marian. He is president of National Honors Society, is Boys' Social Chairman for the Senior Class, and he took films for varsity ball games at Marian this fall.
