Cooney sentenced Philip Lee Soper, 22, formerly of the Riverside hotel, McHenry, to not less than 150 and not more than 200 years for each of the murders of Marlene Ahrens of Woodstock and Gunther R Dolenski of McHenry The sentences will run consecutively. Ten general contractors submitted bids at the McHenry City Council meeting for ad ditions to sewage treatment plant. Follwiing the executive session of a special meeting of the McHenry County college board, an announcement was made that Dr James R. Davis of Mount Carmel, 111., would be offered a contract for the position of president of McHenry County college. With two contests among five school elections held, voters went to the polls in fairly large numbers. The largest vote covering most of the county, elected Gerald M Smith of Woodstock and James J. Harrington, 111, Crystal Lake, to the „ college board. The second contest at Harrison School District 36, Wonder Lake, found Jay W Cristy and Dr S.L Ruggero reelected and Theodore E Dass elected. In McHenry High School District 156 two office holders were unopposed. Lloyd Freund and Howard Weiss Consolidated Grade School District 15 results returned Edward Choate and Dorothy Vick to office for three years and James R. Shaffer for two years. A narcotics raid on an Island Lake home netted drugs and money totaling $6,000. Sheriff Arthur Tyrrell and his men arrested eleven persons. JUNE Thirty-four persons were arrested in county-wide drug raids conducted by narcotic agents of the McHenry County Sheriff Department's Narcotic division. A lovely, dark-haired young lady with poise and dignity, Anne Elliott, 18, was chosen to reign over Fiesta Day. She was also named Miss Congeniality. The annual McHenry Country Art Fair opened June 25. McHenry's three American Field Service students left for their homes in different parts of the world after spending the past year in this community. Dr. Robert W. JULY Robert Strugeon was named Jaycee of the Year at the an nual installation dinner meeting A bombshell exploded at the meeting of the board of High School District 156 when President James Althoff in troduced an offer made to the McHenry County college for the sale of East campus and Mc- Cracken field Mark A Smith, 22, of McHenry, sentenced last December for the murders of Jean Ann Lingenfelter, 17, and Mrs Jean Irene Bianchi, 27, of McHenry and Mrs. Obie Faye Ash of Arkansas, received his fourth long prison term in the death of a fourth young woman. The Board of Health em ployed Richard Wissell, for merly of McHenry, as public health administrator for the McHenry County Department of Health A total of 30,000 lined the parade route for the Marine Festival, which was bigger and better than ever. McHenry set a lively pace for other county municipalities to follow Although still in second place, the city disclosed a sharp lead over Woodstock for the liability period of January, February and March The county total at the rate of 4 per cent, reached $1,916,618.17. Crystal Lake topped the area with $455,278.51, followed by McHenry with $344,923.14 and Woodstock with $278,915.75. Dr. Gregory Eckstein was elected head of Montini Catholic school board. Gordon Tharp was installed commander of Legion Post 491 and Doris Walker became new president of the auxiliary unit. A McHenry man, Robert P. Buss, 42. who eluded Chicago police and FBI agents in vestigating the theft of twenty- fbu/ thousand cases of aspirin, wafs arrested at his home. McHenry County college was recognized by the Illinois Junior College board as a Class I junior college, but with probationary status. Dr. James Davis, M.C.C. superintendent, told board members com pletion of the college's ob jectives for this year would remove the college from this status. During a tour of East campus high, School District 156 President James Althoff told the Citizens Advisory council that the board had agreed on a sale price of $3,700,000. Camp Duncan, located off Rt. 12, north of Volo, marked its fiftieth anniversary this year. St. Mary's Court, No. 594, Catholic Order of Foresters, celebrated its diamond an niversary. AUGUST Semi-annual dollar days were Aug, 5-7. The City Council voted to withdraw the zoning charge against the McHenry Country club. The McHenry County Commission on Criminal Justice has reorganized? and four local men, Kenneth Espey, Gerald V. Fain, Rotfald J. Vacula and John A. Mitchell, were appointed to serve on the commission. A ground breaking ceremony was held to mark the start of construction to enlarge the city of McHenry sewage treatment plant. The City Council voted to negotiate with Vue-Sonics, Inc., for cable television. McHenry's Marine Day Queen, Ann Elliott, was third runner-up in the contest for Miss McHenry County. / McHenry youths excelled in McHenry County Fair com petition. The board of Consolidated Grade School District 15 adopted a budget for ihe year July 1, 1971, to June 30, 1972, listing anticipated ex penditures totaling $3,280,834.- Terry Herkes will spend a year as an exchange student in Japan, sponsored by the Woodstock Rotary club. Announcement was made that the Bureau of Outdool- Recreation in the Department of the Interior approved a federal matching grant in the amount of $1,486,575 to be used for the purchase of 1,493 acres adjacent to the McHenry Dam State park. Dawn Douglas, McHenry's Little Miss Peanut, was named division winner in the Little Miss Peanut contest in Woodstock. Two quartermasters of the McHenry Viscount drum and bugle corps were injured in the crash of their equipment truck and a band bus from Aurora. The accident occurred near Lincoln, when the corps was on its way to the Illinois State Fair The board of High School District 156 adopted a budget calling for expenditures staling $2,664,655. McHenry's City Council passed and approved the an nual ordinance of $266,000. McHenry's snappy appearing drill team known as the Devilaires was proclaimed winner of second place trophy in Illinois State Fair com petition. SEPTEMBER The collection of 1970 taxes in McHenry county reached the level of $19,680,042, ap proximately 72.4 percent of the total charged against the county's taxpayers. The total taxes charged in the county for 1970 are $27,193,742, comprising $23,103,039 in real estate and $3,970,517 in personal property. The dream of a McHenry Rescue squad to meet in creasing needs in the com munity emerged from the planning stage to reality when three local organizations pledged support in raising funds. The City Council adopted a taxi ordinance with licenses limited to three. Beverly Dimon was named second runner-up to the new American Dairy Princess of Illinois, Linda Gayle Matlock, 18. a blue-eyed beauty from Yorkville. Steve J. Cuda received "Golden Scroll For the Promise of Greatness" from McHenry Rotary Club Past President Don Arvidson, a gift of the American Academy of Achievement. Doors of ten McHenry schools opened to welcome a record number of students. In all, there are 5,662 enrolled in classes at all age levels. The City Council passed an ordinance granting Vue-Sonics, Inc., a nonexclusive franchise, for installing Cable Television (CATV) in the area. McHenry residents were watching with interest as work men started the gigantic task of taking down the city's 90-foot standpipe on Waukegan road, erected before the turn of the century. The budget totaling $536,000 was approved by the board of Harrison School District 36. The McHenry county public schools will receive a total of $7,363,574 in state aid for the 1971-72 school year. The Montini school board adopted a school budget of $187,560. The City Council discussed a 50-acre park development. By a vote of 3 to 2, the board of High School District 156 approved a certificate of tax levy in the amount of $2,103,500 to be filed with the county. Tom Broman was designated as a semi-finalist in the 1971-72 National Merit Scholarship program. There will be no county college referendum this fail according to an announcement by President of the McHenry County college, James Davis. Montini school board decided to end the dual enrollment program with the public schools as of Nov. 8. McHenry hospital and McHenry Medical group sought reclassification of zoning property to allow for ex pansion. Beginning this fall, thirty junior and senior boys from the McHenry Community high school west campus will be constructing a home at East wood lane in Eastwood Manor. OCTOBER Congressman John B. An derson of Rockford was featured speaker at the dedication of the new Parkland school. Twelve were arrested by the Sheriff department and Island Lake police in a narcotics raid in Island Lake. Three county youths were killed in a one car accident 3 miles east of Woodstock. One of the victims was Frank A. Rudolph, 18, of 1817 W. River Terrace drive, McHenry. The last fiscal year report from the State of Illinois Department of Revenue in Springfield placed McHenry second among county municipalities in receipts from Retailers' Occupation Tax, Service Occupation Tax and Use Tax. McHenry's total tax receipts amounted to $1,484,269, second only to Crystal Lake with $1,948,836.66. The Johnsburg community and friends throughout the area were stunned to learn of the death of James C., Bush, 55, superintendent of Johnsburg Public School District 12 on Oct. 25. The senior class won first place among classes for their entry in the Homecoming parade. NOVEMBER After long discussions during which objectors voiced their concerns over recom mendations of the Zoning Board of Appeals, the City C o u n c i l a p p r o v e d reclassification requests for off-street parking facilities by McHenry hospital and the McHenry Medical Group. A popular pair of teen-agers from McHenry became Marian high school's homecoming king and queen. They were Sue Anderson and A1 Weingart. Three lady crossing guards were named this fall by City Police Chief Kenneth Espey to assist school children at busy intersections on their way to and from class. Ken Schopp of McHenry Shores was awarded first place trophy in competition with 390 clowns at the Great Lake Shrine convention in Toledo, Ohio. The local man is well known in this area for the role of Uncle Ken and Buttons the Cop and also as the famous clown, Ronald McDonald. After considering different plans, McHenry's City Council voted to award a contract to Lakeland Construction Co., to improve Center street from John street to Kane avenue, at a cost of $37,032.91. Anthony Corcoran, McHenry hospital administrator, was selected president of the District No. 2 Council, one of the ten regional councils established by the Illinois Hospital association, a voluntary organization of more than 300 Illinois hospitals. Father William O. Hanner, D.D. of 810 Oakwood drive, Whispering Oaks, had the distinction of giving the opening prayer at the $500 a plate Salute-to-the President dinner in the Conrad Hilton hotel, Chicago. Bryan O'Neill, an eighth grader at Montini Middle school, won first place at the annual mathematics tour nament for junior high school students held at Carmel High School for Boys in Mundelein. Sixteen candidates from this area filed for supervisor in the new District 2, which includes McHenry. Governor Richard Ogilvie attended a recognition dinner for Jack Schaffer at the McHenry Country club. T r a d i t i o n a l c e r e m o n i e s marked the observance of Armistice Day, Nov. 11, held in the city park. The McHenry Country club will be allowed to use the present parking area on John street for cart storage for another five years, but will not be permitted to improve the property. This was the decision made by the City Council. The Illinois State Scholarship commission named forty-nine students from McHenry high school as state scholars in the 1972-73 competititive state scholar program. Mike Brown was elected president of the McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce. Edward Schmitt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Schmitt of McHenry, was presented letter of commendation for placing high in the National Merit Scholarship test. Following an executive session of the McHenry County college board of trustees, members moved to enter into a one-year option to purchase sixty-six acres of land on Rt. 14, northwest of Crystal Lake, as a site for a permanent junior college. The property owner is Weber Addressing Machine Co. Irene Luby,a 50-year-old Chicagoau with a list of eleven aliases, was charged with theft over $150 by Maurice Soteco, assistant manager at May's Drug store, for shoplifting, which included stealing more than $1,000 in cigarettes alone. Santa Claus arrived in McHenry Nov. 27 to open the holiday season. The Security division of National Tea Co., Chicago, stated that a burglary of substantial size occurred at the McHenry store on the morning of Nov. 24. Two police officers from Frankfort, Germany, visited McHenry county authorities where they are investigating the deaths of three young women who were murdered during the time Mark Smith of McHenry was in service in West Germany. Baker After considerable discussion and several changes, the county board of supervisors approved a budget and levy for the year 1971-72. The general fund budget was in the amount of $3,518,056, with $735,156 presently on hand and an ticipated revenues of $2,782,900. The total budget figure, which also includes special funds, is $894,964 below the previous year. DECEMBER The McHenry County Historical society's bid for $10,000 was accepted for the Union school to be used as a museum. Wire reports disclosed that Mark Smith, 22 year-old con fessed murderer of two McHenry women and two others in Illinois and Arkansas, had admitted killing eight others while stationed with the Army in Germany. Smith is serving a 400-year sentence for the murders committed in this country. All the excitement of a real election prevailed at West campus high school .when students enrolled in U.S. history classes took part in both a primary and general mock election. Senator Kennedy was the winner. In an unexpected move Martha L. Charrey of McHenry pleaded guilty to a charge of voluntary manslaughter. She was accused of the May 23, 1971, murder of her husband, Peter Charrey. The board of trustees of the McHenry County college ap proved a resolution setting Saturday, Feb. 26, for a referendum in the amount of $3,100,000. Holiday home lighting display winners were the Ralph Ott home for most colorful; Donald McCracken home, most original, and Richard Sokolowski home, most amusing. Two large highway con struction projects long awaited by McHenry residents will have their start during 1972. At a joint press conference held in Springfield by William Cellini, Director of Public Works and Buildings, and Richard Golterman, Chief Highway Engineer, it was announced that the first project will see the state acquire rights-of-way for FA Rt. 201A from the Wisconsin state line to U.S. 12 at a cost of $5,500,000. An overpass will be located near the Edward Blake home, north of McHenry. The second project calls for a new four-lane highway on Rt. 120, from Rt. 31 (corner of Front and Elm streets) west to Ringwood-Draper road.
