Mclntyre, assistant director of Civil Defense. mAZ I Merton Jones, RACES radio officer for McHenry County Civil Defense, presided at a recent meeting for radio amateurs, held at the court house annex. The meeting was well attended, with representatives from throughout the county. RACES is the name given to the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service. Roy Schultz explained his duties as director of com­ munications for the County Civil Defense. He explained that all communications for CD will be administered by him. This will include coordination of the Public safety Frequencies, RACES, citizens radio, telephone, etc. The new Emergency Operating center in the new court house was explained by John J. Shay, director of CD for the county. He explained the heart of the EOC was the communications and that they were a very important part of the entire communications plan A special room has been set aside for the radio amateurs. The next meeting of the group will be held in February. At this meeting an advisory board will be appointed. This board will feed back in­ formation from the mem­ bership to the radio officer. Country Club drive McHenry, reported to county authorities that last Friday morning about 1 o'clock, she heard a gun shot. Looking out the window, she saw her dog in the driveway with apparent injuries. The dog was taken to a veterinarian, who reported the injury ap­ peared to be from a 22 caliber weapon. Ogilvie has announced the appointment of eight public members to the new Health Care Licensure commission, and thirteen members representing the Major Polio Problem Health officials have warned of "a definite possibility of a major polio problem in Illinois in the near future." "The ap­ pearance of low immunization levels in pre school children and the presence of isolated polio virus in Illinois indicate an immediate urgency to immunize all pre-schoolers and to protect the rest of the population with a booster dose of trivalent vaccine," Dr. Franklin D. Yoder, director of the Illinois Department of health care professions to an advisory board which will assist the commission. The commission will seek, in part, methods of utilizing returning Viet Nam medical personnel in the health professions. One member of the advisory board is a returned Navy medic who now serves as the state's chief t r a u m a c o o r d i n a t o r . Public Health, announced He said the State Immunization Project reported that blood survey studies in the state show that as little as 18 per cent of the preschool population is immunized against polio. It also reported that many people did not receive the correct immunization, and are therefore not protected against polio. Dr. Yoder urged the parents of all Illinois residents up to the age of 18 to check with their physicians immediately to determine the status of their children's immunizations There is believed to be more Indians, more rabbits, more quail in the U.S. now than when Columbus sailed ocean blue, back in 1492. Kilimanjaro, Africa, is the highest mountain on the continent, and is only 3 degrees from the equator, but has perpetual snow KIWANIS NEWS WONDER LAKE CLUB The Dundee Kiwanis club delivered the traveling gavel to Wonder Lake Jan. 10. Dundee members did a great job of concealing the gavel in a miniature replica of a World War II magnetic mine. Other clubs attending this meeting other than Dundee were Kish- waukee, DeKalb, Woodstock and Belvidere. At the meeting held Jan. 17, members who attended the inter-club at Crystal Lake reported on the informative program they heard presented by a former drug addict. Horace Wagner gave a short resume on his Caribbean cruise. Bob Bright explained the project which is under way at Harrison school to raise funds for the installation\of portable bleachers and stage^in the school gym to provide greater seating capacity for sport events. The brass quartet of Harrison school, under the direction of Richard Mikus, provided the musical portion of the program. The young people in the quartet were Vicki Bazan, Mike Wines, Dtfvid Gerrard and Joey Hansen. Mikus also extended an in­ vitation to the Kiwanians to attend the Jazz clinic which will be held at Marian Central high school Wednesday, Jan. 26, at 8 p.m. Members of the Harrison band will be participating in the clinic. The program for Monday, Jan. 24, will be a movie on Ecology entitled, "A carnival of Ugliness."
