This is consonant with the belief of the board of education and Supt. Boos which gives recognition to the fact that if public schools continue in the mode of years and decades past they may soon find themselves in an educational cul de sac. Change must be acknowledged as an inescapable reality, and our schools must adapt and modify omnipresent change to the uniqueness of our district and community rather than assume merely a reactive posture. District 15 must constantly seek out the needs and aspirations of parents and students to blend with the resources and competencies of Board, administrative staff and faculty. "SPIN YOUR TOPS ', and the endurance test was underway after weeks of hard work, building, decorating and trial spins. Two tops are on their way for the timing as the other con testants eagerly wait their turn. INDUSTRIAL ARTS INSTRUCTOR Eugene Maris times one of the tops. The Art Of Top Spinning It was an excitement known only to youth when Eugene Maris, instructor for the In dustrial Arts class at Parkland school, recently announced a project of building tops. ALL EYES are on the top as the owner prays for a few more spins before the official at lower left in photo, clicks the stop watch en ding the spin The eighth graders eagerly started by designing their tops. Next came the building and decorating Once finished, the boys put their projects through trial spins, then for many, it was back to the drawing boards. When they were satisfied with their finished products, there was still much work to be done as each tried various ways to get the top performance out of the prize possession. Race day dawned, and each contestant entered into the spirit of the event as if he were entering the famous "500". However, for some it would have to be, "Well, maybe next time". One boy accidentally dropped his top. It was never the same. On both tries during the competition it was 30 seconds slower than the trial spins. Others had mishaps of strings breaking or tops striking the wall. They were given a second start. The contestants had two spins, each timed by a different official, and with only two tops in action at the same time. The two spins were totaled and winners announced. Coming down to the last gyrating motion was Humberto Esquivel in first place; Greg O'Halleran, second; Kent Putnam, third; and Bob Hromec, fourth.
