Soph Cagers Split A Pair Over The Weekend By Fred Kusch Coach Gary Collins' young Warriors rebounded from a defeat at the hands of the Crystal Lake Tigers as they nipped the Knights of Kaneland by a score of 47-43. , Friday night's action saw the Warrior attack stumble and fall by the wayside as the Crystal Lake Tigers crushed the Warriors 51-44. The final score did not really indicate the decisiveness of the Tigers' victory. Turnovers and poor defense plagued the Warriors efforts to keep in the ball game. Coach Collins singled out the fine play of Rog Wanta who led scorers with 16 points and Ed Choate who pulled down 20 rebounds and scored 8 points. On Saturday the Warriors traveled south to Kanelarid to meet the Knights. The Warriors turned the tables from the night before as they ripped the Knights by thirteen points. Kerry Decker sparked a good team effort as he subsituted for Kep Novotny who was stricken with the flu. Steve Buss who came into the ball game when both guards who were in foul trouble, was also singled out by Coach Collins for his fine ef forts. The Warriors were con fronted with Kaneland's slowdown brand of ball and showed plenty of savy as they kept their poise while having to wait for the last 2 minutes to salt the victory away. The Sophomore record is now an outstanding 13-3 mark. This weekend the Warriors travel to Dundee tonight and host the Libertyville Wildcats Saturday at Buckner Gym as they try to stretch their record to 15 vic tories against 3 defeats. Hall, Woodstock, announced this week that application blanks for the 1972 competition are now available in the high schools in McHenry county and at the BPO Elks lodges. This year again, total Elks National foundation awards and the Illinois Elks association scholarships are increased. In addition to local awards, the Illinois Elks association is awarding fifteen scholarships at $400 each and twenty-four at $500 each. Also twenty-three awards of $600 have been allocated by the Elks National foundation to Illinois students. These awards are given to those students who, in the state wide judging, are ranked below the top twenty-three whose entries are submitted into National Foundation M.V.S. competition and will compete for awards from $2,500 to $700. Hall pointed out that this means in Illinois this year, the BPO Elks will award eighty- five scholarships ranging from $400 up to a possible $2,500.00. He said that completed en tries are to be mailed to the Court House Annex No. 2, 2109 S. Route 47, Woodstock, on or before Feb. 25. It is expected that state judging will be completed in March and that national winners should be known shortly after May 1. In announcing the National foundation awards, Hall pointed out that this represents a substantial increase over last year and it is the first time since the Foundation scholarship program was begun thirty-seven years ago, that the awards have exceeded one half million dollars. . . .
