New Ideas Dress Up Homes for Spring Carpets Swinging M J M Contrary to the general there's been a style explosio PAGE 11-PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9,1972 to Color i 1 " I " it-"** ' S3* WMl Contrary to the general trend to more subdued colors for home decorating, carpets swing the other way and are often the focal point as well as the brightest color in a room. Carpet is no longer the neutral that covered the floor and pulled together a room. It now has color, character and individuality that re flects the homemaker and her family's taste. Today's carpets are tex tured, printed and flocked. They're excitingly alive in in teresting patterns and "long haired" snags. Once almost exclusively area rugs, shags are the fastest- growing style in wall-to-wall carpet today. Speaking of area rugs, there's been a style explosion in this "area," too. Small Orientals and furry looks, as as well as the popular rya shags, go right over broad- loom to dramatically high light seating area or tables. Synthetic fibers make car pet care easy. And new ideas such as printing put reason able price tags on patterned carpets. Another step for ward is carpet with its own high density foam rubber backing. Foam rubber backed car pet ends the need for a sepa rate carpet pad and allows people to easily install their own carpet -- two important advantages. Much of the foam rubber backed carpet -- in printed patterns, flockings and tweeds -- suits family rooms, children's rooms and kitch ens. V Here the backing gives a definite advantage. It adds warmth; children can play on the floor. The foam muf fles sound, insulating against the distracting noises of hi-fl or laundry equipment. However, printed and flocked carpets are being used in living rooms, and other more formal areas, too. SOFT MEETS SLEEK In fall's mix of soft and sleek, velvet upholstery may combine with a sofa frame of tubular steel. To help a kitchen radiate hospitality, the app come in sunny harvest colors to contrast with cabinets. For space saving, range is compact, just 24 inches of space. English Country look, one of several current furniture styles in the relaxed mood, creates a living room with warmth and charm. The atmosphere is congenial rather than too informal, since the English oak furnishings have substance and authority. Shown, Cotswold Oak furniture by Conant Ball. Good Mixers Start Furnishings Trend "Selecting, choosing from various sources, systems." This dictionary dehnition of the word "eclectic" sums up the most prevalent trend in home fashion today. A simpler, more familiar way of saying the same thing is, "mixing styles." In today's homes furnishings traditional or contemporary, from many eras and areas, live together com patibly, bringing beauty and comfort to the home -- and giv ing the homemaker more scope in planning and arranging home decor. The elegance of the traditional is married to the clean, airy look of the contemporary, with results that are both pleasing to the eye and beneficial to living ease. The Mediterranean mood, with its feeling of richness and a touch of the ornate, is right at home with the linear look of modern furnishings. Providing Country Air Country looks, either English or early American, link their sturdy warmth to the somewhat more delicate casualness of Italian or French Provincial. Bringing outdoor furniture, and the outdoor look, indoors for a year-round atmosphere that's bright and relaxed is a part of the trend toward picking and choosing from the best decorating are only a begin ning. Individuality -- and indi viduals--make the difference between a neat, proper and dull decor and a home that's ready for living. Quality Counts In Longer Wear Planning a new bathroom can and should be easy. That's because there's a wide choice of equipment. Here are some helpful tips from the Plumbing-Heating- Cooling Information Bureau: 1. Make sure the bathroom is big enough. Until recently, a 5x7-foot size was considered adequate. Now rooms 7x9 or larger are coming into vogue. The extra space enables in stallation of a more luxurious tub and twin-bowl lavatory to double bathroom utility and elegance. 2. Choose better-quality equipment. It's the most ef ficient and retains its good looks longer. The siphon-jet is the best water closet because it's got the best flushing action and is the most quiet. 3. It's important to have quality faucets and other brass that will not corrode from contact with water. The better showerheads come with varied settings, from needle-spray to full-How. 4. Don't skimp on the size of the medicine cabinet. It's wonderful to have enough room for all toiletries, and large mirror doors give a look of luxury. 5. Choose colors carefully. The most popular colors cur rently are tan, blue and pink, followed by green and yellow. 6. A shower enclosure is another useful item that gives the bathroom a rich look. A final tip: Visit a plumb ing contractor's store to see what's available in fixtures, faucets, accessories and floor and wall coverings. VINYL WALL COVERINQ, in a country floral pattern, completes wall decor, comple ments brick pattern of vinyl asbestos tile. New appliances help, too. Used here, Flint- kote's peel and stick tile. Decorator panels add custom look to air-conditioning units. Scenic design here is one of many avail able. It's from Chrysler Airtemp^ Imperial series, which includes prints, simulated wood grains. Bedroom planned for an active young girl provides plenty of studying, storage, sleeping space to suit her needs. Photographs of her friends are framed and matted to coordinate with the decor. Portrait photog raphers are experts in framing photos for home display. Family Can Enjoy Fine T ableware Beautifully-set tables are a source of pride for special occasions--but they're meant ior family enjoyment, too. Many a homemaker finds that a table set with lovely accessories has a beneficial effect on family dining. The woman with a growing fam ily often cites the influence on her children when, in stead of "any old flatware," she uses her sterling silver. Not only do children learn to use and appreciate fine table accessories, but such an atmosphere actually seems to promote better manners. It's a wise mother, of course, who keeps her fine china and crystal safe out of the reach of toddlers and young chil dren. but once they're grown to the stage where they can be trusted with breakables, there's no reason why these beautiful things can't be en joyed by the whole family. In the case of sterling sil ver flatware, there's little need to worry - about wear and tear. And despite its seeming fragility, it's dura ble. Constant use, in fact, helps sterling grow lovelier, as any display of antique sil ver proves. Gifts of beautiful table ware aren't the prerogative of the bride alone. For in stance, homemakers who weren't lucky enough to re ceive a usable set of sterling when they married, are often able to add to their set later on. There's no need to be shy one place setting when it can mean the difference between a table set beautifully for the whole family and one at which one member has to "make do" with other flat ware. Serving pieces, too, such as tablespoons, serving forks and ladles, are often the missing links in an otherwise usable set of solid silver. With a few adroit hints to family or friends, these items can be gradually acquired as birth day or anniversary gifts. These days, when pretty tables are more and more part of the scene, lovely table accessories should be on view as often as possible. And who but the family is most en titled to enjoy them? of all sca&oiis, as well as all styles, whether the furnish ings are casual or formal. The family's preferences, and the family's pattern of living, are the guides to "eclectic" home decorating, which brings together many different elements into one harmonious blend, complete in its attractiveness. Evidence of this trend is seen, too, in the increasing emphasis on materials and colors, which may mix to gether or embody two tnemes in one. Offering Modern Ease Fine woods show off their grain and their patina in to day's furniture. They are at once natural and opulent. Glass and metals, used in modern ways, are tradition ally elegant in appearance -- and both appear increasingly in decorating schemes. Man-made fibers, in car peting particularly, certainly offer modern ease, yet tney also provide a wide range of color and pattern to lend a richness-of-yesteryear to ev ery home. In essence, the eclectic trend adds up to what every homemaker always knew. Good taste is a personal mat ter, and the basic rules for WHY WAIT? Outdoor furniture can be ainted and repaired now, doors. MAKING SPACE Space saving as well as good looks is aim of new designs in chairs, tables, wall units, which are made to stack and bunch conveniently.
