COMMENTARY A FOOT-PATTING PACE is rapidly being reached as TV politicizing quickens. The GOP's jumbo and Demo cratic donkey are snorting at each other ever more often as election winds begin to blow. "Equal time" bids are flying more rapidly than a warehouse auctioneer's jargon when selling Lucky Strike tobacco. STRANGE THINGS may someday be happening in the shoot-out competition between TV and the local movie house. Theaters may begin showing old TV ivies. People in Chicago are^>*xing hard cash to see "Brian's Song", which they could have seen free last November on television. The grand reviews the TV show received could have promoted the movie. AN ^VCTOR named Roger Davi^ will begin in one of the co-starred title roles in "Alias Smith and Jones" on February third. He replaces Pete Duel, who portrayed Hannibal Heyes, but was found dead in his Hollywood home. ABC WILL feature some oldies but goodies on Feb ruary 16th. "The Twentieth Century Follies" will head line Alan King. Also appear ing will be June Allyson, Edgar Bergen, Milton Berle, Chubby Checker, Pinky Lee, Mantan Moreland and Duke Snider. THE JIMMY STEWART SHOW began as a slow burn er--as slow as the star's talking. But it turns out to be quite an enjoyable pro gram. Viewers enjoy the quick witted conversation and repartee contained in the show. PROGRAMS LIKE "Curi osity Shop" and "Take A Giant Step" are stumping their toes when competing against "Popeye", "The Road Runner", and such. One hopes the day will come when the more constructive children's programming will prevail. CATCHING a second wind in the current Ty season, programmers are inserting midseason replacements for the shakiest shows. Among the redeemers is "Me and the Chimp," about a dentist whose family adopts a ctymp. Also appearing is "The Don Rickles Show" and a pro gram about a parapsycholog- ist 's bouts with the super natural, entitled "The Sixth Sense." MANY TV singing and comic stars sponsor golf tournaments. This month of ficial pasture pool tourna ments were sponsored by Glen Campbell, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin and Andy Wil l i a m s , O n t e e n e x t m o n t h will be Bob Hope's Desert Classic and Jackie Glea- s o n ' s I n v e r r a r y C l a s s i c . Redd Foxx, a black comic famed for his blue nightclub material is tre mendous as a whining, poker- faced parent who dominates his son with phony heart at tacks and other transparent but successful ruses. FOXX SUPPLIES some of his own lines in the show. A less obvious Foxx contri bution is the show's title. His real name is John San- ford. The program is pro duced by Bud York in and Norman Lear, the team that created "All in the Family." THE SONNY AND CHER COMEDY HOUR has staked out a strong claim in ratings territory. It has attracted a forty per cent share of the audience for its Monday night time slot. In transla tion, this means that approx imately 30 million viewers watch the show. The qualities we possess are never as glamorous as the one's we'd like to have. APPEAL TAX DECISION Gov. Richard B. Ogilvie has announced he will ask the United States Supreme Court to knock out the Illinois personal property tax on all individuals. Heiwill file as a "friend of the court" in support of a petition to review the proceedings filed by Attorney General William J. Scott in the Lake Shore Auto Parts case. Ogilvie is a member of the bar of the high court and will act "pro se" (for himself). His brief will argue that the Illinois court im properly decided that the 1970 referendum ending the tax on individuals conflicted with the federal constitution. The state court ruled that corporations were denied equal protection under the 14th Amendment to the United States constitution by the overwhelmingly popular vote in support of an Illinois constitutional amendment.
