Trust you snowmobilers will understand, by Inga Every time I think of it being the last week in January, and the most snow we have gotten is 2 inches in this area, Pve come to the conclusion there is a hex on us poor snowmobilers. To think we missed a predicted 15 inch snowfall by only 200 miles last weekend makes it all the worse. Even writing this column is getting hard because snowmobiling has almost come to a standstill in this area. With the lack of snow, snow­ mobiles sitting around with only 1 or 2 miles on them, not being able to trailer, some snowmobilers may take unnec­ essary chances and start run­ ning on the lakes. Your weather has been cold, but only spotty, the lakes need a gradual steady freezing to make them safe. For the first time in ten years I have seen the middle of Pis- takee Bay open in the winter, regardless of the 20 below we had not long ago. There are open areas around Coon Island, Meyers Bay and as always Pistakee Lake which has the Fox River current flowing ti»ru it. There are a few spots that are safe but the areas are so small it isn't worth it con­ sidering it may mean your life or the loss of the snowmobile. Remember it is not the snow­ mobile or the sport that causes accidents, it's the carelessness of the driver. If you do not have a trailer and just itching to get into snow country, have you thought of renting a U-Haul for a day or weekend?? We have seen many on our way up north. One of our readers made a trip up to Wisconsin Rapids last weekend and called to tell me they had an excellent time. The suggestions I made on motels, restaurants, and trail information they said came in very handy. Saturday evening their group snowmobiled to the Country Club, and after dinner they followed the high tension line trail behind Wick's and headed for Kellner with trails leading them through woods and beautiful pine areas. Dale re­ ports the snow was about 5 or 6 inches with a light crust on top. Until they reached Wis­ consin Rapids snow conditions were poor for snowmobiling. Adams and Friendship had only a light cover. I under stand as of 1 Tuesday this area received an additional 3 inches. Travel time was about 3% hours. I mentioned in my column several weeks ago that I can not give the names of the motels, restaurants, and other places of business that would be help­ ful to snowmobilers visiting different areas. We haven't been up there, but I understand that Black River Falls. Wisconsin has excellent marked trails with many miles of snowmobiling through wooded forest. Located on highway 1-90, it's about a 3 hour drive. Itfs about 35 miles west of Madison near rte. 151 and 18. Harmony Snowmobile Club members have several safaris scheduled for February (if there is snow). Their second annual Hodge Podge outing at Lake Geneva, and a Friday night snowmobile ride ending with dinner at a local restaurant. Hope by next week at this time we will have just gobs of snow. Prospect Jackie Whitney, a physical education major from McHenry, is the only freshman on Western Illinois University's intercollegiate basketball first team. Voted as most athletic girl in her senior year at McHenry, Jackie competed in Girls' Athletic Assn., hockey, basketball, volleyball, swimming and bowling. This past fall quarter at WIU she played center on the women's hockey team. Of the 52 girls trying out for this year's three teams, 33 were accepted. The season began Jan. 13. On Feb. 5, WIU will host a tour­ nament. During the 15-game season the women will play Northern, Eastern, Illinois State, Southern, and Drake universities.
