Twelve tables of cards and bunco were in play. Those who attended the Empire Theatre on Wednesday night sure saw a good program. For along with a good film, the Great Gilbert, an entertaining hypnotist, was on the stage, showing what can be ac­ complished in that line. Peter A. Freund, Jr., master plumber, announces the opening of a plumbing and heating business on Green street, McHenry, where he is ready to give estimates and make contracts for anything in this line of work. Basketball is becoming such a popular sport that even the faculty of the high school is becoming its ardent followers. On Monday night the faculty team travelled to Harvard where they played their first game of the season with the Harvard faculty, winning by a score of 25 to 17. The team is composed of McCracken, Edmund Willis, Clarence Anglese, Joe Smith, M.L. Schoenholtz and Ted Anderson. Fred Weinschenker, 62 years old, died at St. Therese hospital, Waukegan, Jan. 25. Death resulting from pneumonia Mrs. Joanne Rulien, Miss Mildred Minnich, Mrs. Flay McGee and Miss Helen Stevens were Thursday evening Chicago visitors. They saw "Lohengrin" at the Civic opera house. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Jan. 30, 1947) Not only because it is his eighty-third birthday an­ niversary, but also because of t-hirty-one years service to the city of McHenry do we offer congratulations to Math Niesen. Mr. Niesen celebrated his anniversary on Jan. 29 as a guest of honor at a family dinner at the Clarence Niesen home. McHenry is proud of the very attractive recently remodeled building which now houses the McHenry Laundry. Lester Adams has converted the former creamery building at 607 Crystal Lake road into a modern laundry. Mrs. Howard Collins at­ tended a birthday dinner for Mrs. Ernest Lumber in the latter's home in Ingleside on Tuesday. The small daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Krohn, Jr., was baptized last Sunday morning at the Methodist church, Rev. Wayne Price officiating. A bridal shower was held at the home of Mrs. Anna Miller last Sunday afternoon honoring Miss Miriam Buensli of Chicago, fiancee of Eugene Miller. Hostesses were Miss Mary Ann Miller and Mrs. Nick Miller \ The McHenry Township Fire Protection Commissioners put on quite a party last Thursday night at the Villa Club for the firemen, their wives, telephone operators and other guests. Mrs. Louella Hanford of Spring Grove injured her index finger on the right hand when she accidentally caught it in an electric meat grinder. The tip of her finger was so badly mangled it had to be removed to the first joint. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 1, 1962) Starting with 1963 model cars as an added safety factor for motorists, auto manufac­ turers will begin using amber lights instead of white for front turn signals. On Monday morning of this week, the fifty-five pupils who attend Ringwood school walked to a new location and entered a modern building for classes. It was the first time in more than a century that youthful members of the community had not reported to the white schoolhouse which has been a landrtiark for that length of time. The Viscount drum and bugle corps will hold its second an­ nual color guard contest Feb. 18 in the McHenry high school gymnasium. This year the show will consist of both the Legion and V.F.W. national champion color guards. Leo Scarbrough of McCullom Lake is improving in the McHenry hospital from severe head injuries received in a two vehicle collision on McCullom Lake blacktop. St. Mary's Catholic church was the setting for a beautiful mid-winter wedding Jan. 27 when Miss Mary Ann Sossong became the bride of Mr. James C. Doherty. Rev. FY. Rennell officiated at the service. The "Flower Vendor" might well be the name of the beautiful snow lady fashioned by artist Loretta Wilhelm and now occupying a prominent place in her front yard on Main street. Dr. and Mrs. Frank Sek announce the birth of a son at Harvard hospital, Jan. 29. The Niger River rises 150 miles from the ocean, then flows 2.500 miles to reach it.
