You And Your Pet If anyone thinks rabies is no longer a problem in this country, he is wrong - dead wrong. People are still dying from it, and only the fear of this dread disease could persuade anyone - including me - to take the painful anti-rabies treat ment following an animal bite. That some 20,000 Americans undergo the treatment each year is proof that society still fears rabies. Death from rabies is not only agonizing, it is usually inevitable. To my knowledge, only one person has ever survived a rabies infection. Thanks to his doctors' skill, six- year-old Matthew Winkler, of Willshire, Ohio, recently recovered from the disease. Matthew .was bitten on the thumb by a rabid bat. Although he received fne series of 14 anti- rabies shots (given under the skin of the abdomen), he still came down with the disease. The fact that he still survived is now medical history, but his case underlines two other important facts: that anti- rabies treatment is far from perfect and that the reservoir of rabies virus in wildlife is a continuous threat to man. Rabies is caused by a slow- acting virus. It enters the wound from an infected animalrs saliva and travels up nerve trunks toward the spinal cord, and, finally, the brain. Because it is slow-acting, a post-infection vaccine can prevent the disease in man, though sometimes the vaccine can be just as dangerous. That is why, except for veterinarians and others who routinely handle animals, few people are vaccinated against a possible infection. Reasearchers are seeking safer, much less painful vac cines and other treatments for rabies. But until they are successful, the best way to prevent rabies is to vaccinate your household dogs and cats. In my opinion, the rabies vaccines available for animals are far superior to those available for man. These modern vaccines are inex pensive, do not hurt your pet and provide a high degree of protection. In many aireas, the law says pets must be vaccinated against rabies, but I know many are not. Owners run the risk of their dogs or cats con tracting the disease from rabid wildlife, including bats, foxes, skunks and other animals. Not only is the contact bet ween unprotected domestic pets and wildlife a serious problem, but many people are bringing potentially rabid wild animals into their homes. I think many people fail to protect their pets and risk infection themselves from wild animals mainly because they don't know very much about rabies. It's time we faced some of the facts: All warm-blooded animals - and that includes human beings - are susceptible to rabies. - The disease is world-wide. --Thousands of cases of rabies are reported annually in the United States. -These cases occur in every month of the year. Because rabies is a slow- acting virus, symptoms may not appear until after a long period of incubation, ranging up to several months. When the symptoms do appear in an animal, it is in the form of a change in normal behavior. Friendly animals become aggressive; timid animals become bold. In some cases (but not all), animals become furious; they snap and bite constantly. Finally, they sometimes pass into a paralytic or dumb state. But always, they die. While great progress has been made in protecting the nation's 25 million dogs from rabies, very few of our 27 million cats have ever been vaccinated against this serious disease. Cats are hunters and are often exposed to animals that carry rabies. Without protection from a vaccine, cats can and do get rabies. Some countries are totally free of rabies. By having your cat as well as your dog vac cinated against rabies periodically, you can help speed the day when this country will also be free of this terrible disease. Dr. Minor regrets that he is unable to personally answer letters from pet owners. He recommends that readers consult their own veterinarians when their pets have problems. Glass-Can Collection At Crystal Lake For those who have faithfully been saving cans and bottles siqce before Christmas, the time has come to clean out basements and garages. Saturday, Feb. 19, is the day to deliver them to the Crystal Lake Plaza. The collection will be held from 9 to 1. Crystal Lake high school students will be furnishing the needed muscle. The proceeds from the sale of the cans and bottles will go toward projects in the Lawndale area of Chicago. These students make regular trips into Lawndale to work with the children of the area and there are many physical improvements they would like to make also. Bottles must be clean, have all metal removed and separated according to color. Remove the paper, tops and bottoms from tin cans and flatten them. This is the only way these articles will be ac cepted at the factories. There will be no paper pick-up this month. Young Democrats Give Support To College Vote The McHenry County Young Democrats have endorsed the upcoming referendum for a new junior college campus site. "The students at the McHenry County Community college have been without a permanent home for too long," said Pete Hellios, Jr., president of the McHenry County Y-D's. "Passage of this referendum will demonstrate to ^young people that the voters of this county are committed to the junior college." The proposed site is just outside of Crystal Lake on Highway 14, northwest of High- 'way 176. * • Hellios commended the work V/.A.
