Caesarea, built by Herod in 25 B.C., had the world's first known subway. / by Carol Wilyat If your pet has been rubbing or scratching his head excessively, it could be a sign of ear trouble. There are several things to watch for in an animal's ears. One of these is infections. Check his ears. If the inner part is inflamed or has a foul odor, there is a good chance it is infected. If you can't see any signs of a problem, yet your pet persistently shakes his head or scratches his ears, he could still have an infection. Don't try to treat it yourself. An animal's ears are very delicate, and only a veterinarian should treat them for infections. Always trim the excess hair away from your pet's ears, and never use water to cleanse them. If you're going to clean the excess wax in your pet's ears, use a cotton-tipped swab dipped in baby oil or peroxide and be very, very gentle. Another source of annoyance are ear mites. These are most common to cats, but dogs can have them. These are hard to detect unless they are very severe, so it is a good idea to have a veterinarian check the ears occasionally. Mites and infections can be very serious and can even cause deafness. Please do not overlook the care of your pet's ears. We want to call special at tention to the office telephone number. It is 815-455-0566. Because all of the 459 prefix numbers were assigned, Illinois Bell gave us a new 455 prefix.
