A sure sign of winter. Watch for the birds sitting on the chimneys to stay warm. GRANDMA Yep, Grandma, we remember those catsup bottles with corks. In fact, not long ago we had another kind of bottle with a cork and didn't have a corkscrew in the house. One of our guests gave us one shortly after. They don't want us caught short again. Before our last column hit the press, Winkel came in - and he wasn't empty handed. 'Twas an Irish brand of cheer - not to be opened until St. Patrick's Day. McHenry is going to have a regional basketball tour nament, starting Feb. 29. Dick Rabbitt turned in the schedule for this issue. Now, maybe Dick or Fred Kusch will send us a story on the regional for next week. NOTE TO CHRIS BENNETT. . Do you have any press releases or Bear pictures on the much talked of McHenry Fireman-Chicago Bears basketball at West Campus March 10? From where we sit and listen, that game is going to draw a crowd. The morning paper reports all Cub players signed but Billy Williams. If reports are true, ne wants enough money to buy a block of stock in the Wrigley Corporation. "... we were sinking faster . . ." "the waves were 35 feet above us ' ". more and more shark fins cutting the water. " - -THOR HEYERDAHL .UkA EXPEDITIONS PAGE 6-PLAINDEAIER-FRIDAY FFRPIIARV 18, 1972 Warriors Slash Streaks With Hot Shooting and Strong Defense, 68-44 by Fred Kusch Behind the hot shooting of Mark Hoffman and Don Prazak the McHenry Warriors got their Orange and Black machine back on the victory track again last week as they trounced the Woodstock Blue Streaks 68-44. Hoffman and Prazak who scored 25 and 20 respectively both came off of injury that have hampered their play. It was by far Hoffman's finest performance this season as he connected 11 field goals and 3 charity shots. Changing defenses facilitated the offensive efforts of the Warriors as they mixed up 2-2-1 and man to man defenses which limited the Streaks to only 42 shots and 13 field goals. It was the Warriors 2-2-1 zone press at the beginning of the second quarter that proved to be the Streaks undoing and the tur ning point of the ball game. The Warriors fine defense provided them with 19 Woodstock tur novers In the Battle of the boards the Warriors dominated the scene as they out rebounded the Streaks 47-28 with Don Prazak pulling down 20 rebounds to match his 20 points. The victory should help prepare the Warriors for their back to back games with Barrington and North Chicago this weekend. Saturday the Warriors travel to North Chicago where they will face the Warhawks who are ranked number 8 in the state by all the major wire services. The Warhawks sport a tough 19-1 record. Friday night the Warriors will host the Broncos of Barrington at West Campus. (PLAINDEALER PHOTO) The McHenry swimming team brought their season record to 6 wins and 8 losses as they split a pair of exciting back-to-back home meets this week. On Tuesday the Warriors lost a heartbreaker to Elgin 52- 43. Elgin won the meet by 1-10 of a second in the last event, the 400 yard freestyle relay, despite the record setting performance of the McHenry relay team of Decker, Watkins, Weiss and Swanson. First and second places were swept by Kevin Weiss and Kevin Carroll in the 200 yard individual medley and by Scott Topp and Doug Eschner in the 100 yard backstroke. A varsity record was set by the victorious medley relay team of Topp, Sek, Voorhees and Swanson. Soph sensation Sek, Topp and Weiss, shattered the records in the 100 yard breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly. On Wednesday the Warriors came back todunkLibertyville 79-17. Victorious were the medley relay of Topp, Mar- cellis, Weiss and Eschner. The You must see RA! An astounding true-life adventure for the whole family! COMING TUESDAY FEEBRUARY 22 1 DAY ONLY EARL WALSH So I Hear State Basketball Tourney Comes To McHenry SPORTS EDITOR J It was weeks ago that John Busscher told us to keep the night of Feb. 15 free. He didn't say why, but down went the date in our calendar of coming events. The day came and the night followed. Down to McHenry Country Club for a smoker - men only. We had one good time. Dick Zieman operated the movie machine, showing golf tour nament pictures and a film covering the 1971 All-Star football game in Soldier Field. After watching some sharp shots, Harold Jensen informed ft us, "That's the way I play golf." We knew Harold was modest 'cause, after winning a local tournament last year, he took off for home instead of waiting to have his picture taken. Bill Swanson, who was one of the officials in the All-Star Baltimore Colts game, as well as many other big games, was the speaker of the evening. He was pretty smooth at sliding in little humorous lines. Nice fellow. We enjoyed his talk. Of course, there were refreshments aplenty. Then came a social hour when stories and tales gave us the best laughs in a long time. Still had a smile on our Irish map when we arrived home and the little woman must have wondered what we had been up to. Sonomongun we had some fun! -- And we will be more than pleased to mark down any future dates, John. Remember way back when we had to use a corkscrew to open a catsup bottle. Com peting in the regional will be the host McHenry Warriors, the Woodstock Blue Streaks, the LEAP FOR A BETTER VIEW AND No. 21 Wilson of the Wood stock Blue Streaks appears to be doing only that as he carefully studies the shooting skill of Warrior Jim Hurckes. McHenry, with their win over Woodstock, is now 7-4 in the North Suburban Con ference. (PLAINDEALER PHOTO) MARK HOFFMAN, with ball under basket, gets fouled by a Blue Streak while attempting a shot. Mark totaled 25 points in the Warrior li8-44 victory over the Blue Streaks of Woodstock. Wat ching the foul is No. 44 Don Prazak who helped the Warriors along with 20 points. (PLAINDEALER PHOTO) First thing that hit our eyes in this morning's paper was, "HOW TO SHAPE UP YOUR FIGURE FOR SPRING FASHIONS." Now they tell us!
