"Editor: "On Jan. 27, 1972, at 4:50 p.m., there was a collision between a city of McHenry snow plow and an automobile on Ramble road, not at the intersection as reported to the McHenry Plaindealer by the city of McHenry police. "The city police were naturally called and arrived on Cookies the scene and immediately went into a huddle with the two men from the snow plow in the comfort and warmth of the squad car, leaving the teen ager who had a large lump on the forehead and his 76-year-old grandmother, who had recently suffered a stroke, supporting him They had to shiver in the sub-zero cold with a very strong wind blowing snow on them for fifteen minutes. "The officer finally descended from his com fortable squad car and in formed the teen-ager that he was going to get a citation. No charge was mentioned and he was taken to the police station even though his car was as far to the right side of the road as he could possibly get without running into the ditch He and three witnesses noted this action "Then the city of McHenry snow plow passed over the area three times However, there was one thing that could not be covered up and that was the large patch of anti freeze from the ruptured radiator. (Even salt will not melt snow and ice at zero temperatures ) "At the police station, the patrolman had to ask the sergeant who had to ask the lieutenant what the charge should be This was done in the presence of two witnesses. "A citation was issued for driving too fast for conditions. "At the subsequent court hearing, the court found the teen-ager not guilty. All wit nesses were excluded from the court room The two city em ployees offered conflicting testimony and the officer testified that he did not witness the incident. "We have a witness who will testify the snow plow went past her house at a very high rate of speed less than 100 feet from the point of impact. Two other witnesses saw the actual im pact. " H o w e v e r , i n s u r a n c e companies go by police reports and the teen-ager has a $1,100 loss to the car, a towing bill, attorney fees, and the biggest insult of all, a two dollar fee for a police report. How many people have been chased off the street by these monsters and Up*gated? "4 If the snow plow struck a^ little child, would Ije or she be given a ticket for (walking too fast for conditions? Willis H.Walker, Pastor Sunday Worship, 11 a.m. Sunday School, 9:45 a.m. We've all heard that a picture is worth a thousand words. But this photo tells the whole story of mankind. The barbed wire symbolizes this earth we live in -- filled with war, hatred, greed. Transcending the ugliness of this world is the Cross, symbol of Christ 's sacrifice for us, the promise of eternal l ife. But we don't have to wait t i l l death for a better l ife. We can do something about that barbed wire. More understanding, and selfless--not selfish--action would do much to purge our world of ugliness. God's Church is the natural means of resolving discord. Human nature being what it is , heaven on earth is impossible. But improvement on earth is possi ble -- necessary!
