A crash, followed by a jar, brought visions of a bomb or an earthquake, or perhaps both, to John Anderson, proprietor of the Broadway Barbecue Friday night, when his place was shaken by a most unusual accident. A woman driving a big Hudson 8, coming from the south on Route 61 was unable to make the curve, her car shot across to the gravel shoulder where Mr. Anderson had placed some large white washed rocks to mark" his driveway. In some way the Hudson car picked up one of these 90 pound boulders and hurled it through the front window with such force that it hit the wall on the opposite side of the room. Luckily no one was in its path. Michael Schaefer was guest of honor at a party held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Katherine Nimsgern, on Green street Sunday. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 20, 1947) Relatives and friends helped two former residents, Mr. and Mrs. W.H. VanNatta of Crystal Lake, celebrate their golden wedding anniversary Sunday, Feb. 16, the real anniversary date is Feb. 17. The couple lived in this vicinity for many years. Mrs. VanNatta is the mother of Robert Thompson of this city. Those from here to attend the McHenry County Business and Professional Women's meeting in Woodstock, Feb. 17, were Mrs. Peter M. Justen, were Mrs. Peter M. Justen, Mrs. George Collette, Mrs. H.A. Steffan, Mrs. Paul Schwerman, Mrs. Elizabeth Pich, Mrs. C.W. Goodell and Miss Ethel Jones. According to Ray McGee, chairman of the recent March of Dimes drive in McHenry township, local residents supported the campaign very adequately with a large amount of money being collected. Old timers will read with regret of the passing of Charles Doty Schoonmaker, 73, who died Feb. 14 at his home in Geneva, following a heart attack. Mr. Schoonmaker at one time editor of the McHenry Plaindealer came to this city before the turn of the century on a bleak March night in 1898. His first recollection of McHenry, as he later told friends, were not flattering to the little town he later grew to love. Spending his first night at the Riverside House operated by the John I. Storys, he later recalled the ice covered river, the snowy ground and leafless trees which greeted him from his hotel window. This im pression was soon dispelled after taking over his new duties as foreman of the mechanical department of the newspaper. At that time he was employed by M.F. Walsh of Harvard, who owned the paper with Senator Granger, Judge Donnelly of Woodstock, Will Cristy and others politically bound, the organization being known as the McHenry Plaindealer Co. Mr. Schoonmaker was later appointed editor of the local paper and retained that position until leaving McHenry seven years later. A very lovely mid winter wedding was solemnized Feb. 15 at St. Genevieve's church, Chicago, uniting in marriage Miss Miriam Beunzli of Chicago and Mr. Eugene Miller of McHenry. Two people were injured Friday morning when the automobile in which they were riding collided with a truck on State Rt. 120 near Lily Lake. The injured were Mrs. Norma Porter and Arthur Finley, both of Wonder Lake. The anniversary of fifty-five years of married life will be celebrated by Mr. and Mrs. John Phalin of Richmond road, Feb. 24. The couple and their eight children will enjoy a dinner at Art and Lee's restaurant. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Steffan and children, Marie and (Paul, attended the wedding of Miss Evelyn Steffan and Raymond Krog at an 8 o'clock candlelight service at the Presbyterian church in Elgin, Feb. 15. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 22 1962) Norbert Sauers, third grade student at Harrison school, Wonder Lake, suffered bruises and internal injuries while sliding on his sled when it collided with a car. Lakemoor's Company 2, volunteer firemen of the McHenry Township Fire Protection district were called to the Russell Weyland home at Griswold Lake Sunday evening where flames caused extensive damage. Margaret Marchi, W. Trey road, McHenry, and Robert McDonald, N. Dennis blvd., McHenry, have been presented with certificates of merit in recognition of high per formance in the National Merit Scholarship program. The two students, seniors at M.C.H.S., have a distinction won by fewer than 10,000 students about one half of one per cent of the secondary school seniors in the nation. For the first time, a Chicagoland Lawn and Garden Power Equipment dealers association meeting was held in McHenry. The February meeting was held Tuesday evening at the McHenry Country club with the R.G. Howe Distributing Co. of McHenry as host sponsor. Anthony Corcoran recently appointed administrator of McHenry hospital, comes from Community Memorial hospital of Cloquet, Minn., where he had been administrator since 1957. FYior to that position he served as assistant administrator of Greene County Memorial hospital, Waynesburg, Pa. He also held the position of ac countant at St. Mary's hospital, Duluth, Minn. He is a member of the American Association of Hospital Accountants and the National Exchange club. Friends in McHenry will be happy to learn that Rev. John J. McGowan, former assistant pastor at St. iPatrick's church, McHenry, and now chaplain in the Air Force, was recently awarded the First Oak Leaf Cluster to the air force com mendation medal at Bent- waters-Woodbridge, England. Army Pvt. Wayne R. Gaylord of Greenwood road, Ringwood, recently completed the ten week photographic laboratory operation course at the signal school Fort Monmouth, N.J. Lakemoor-Lilymoor 385-5689 Alma Hueckstaedt Association Meet Features Guest Speaker The next meeting will be held on March 14, at 8 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend. There will be a guest speaker who most of those in attendance will find very interesting. Come out to 319 N. Glenwood avenue and bring a neighbor with you. The dance committee will be meeting next week and in my next column I will report on the pt-ogress of this project. BIRTHDAYS This week we have one belated birthday to offer best wishes for and that is to Wynne Hegner. She celebrated her birthday on Feb. 22. On March 3, Helen Povidas will be celebrating her big day. On March 5, we can wish Lawrence Bartelt a very happy day. Best wishes to Jacob Johnson on March 6. Patricia Bolda will be one year older on March 7. On March 8 Rowan Minton will be blowing out the candles on his cake. A very happy day to all the above. If you have had a birthday that has not been listed in the column it is in all probability not on my file. If you want it to be in the paper then call me so I can add it to my list. IN CLOSING With the icy conditions we have been having I have heard of many people falling down, including myself, luckily no serious injuries so far and I sincerely hope there are none to come, so be very careful if you must venture out as it is im possible to know where the ice is under the new fallen snow. My sister in Chicago was not one of the fortunate ones as she is home nursing a broken ankle she acquired on her way to work. Welcome to the "Fall Down Club" Iva, along with my friends and neighbors who are also members. See you next week. Non-delinquent kids still outnumber delinquents about 75 to one.
