"They are less likely" he said, "to show up on welfare rolls." Of particular interest to his local audience were facts which indicated that McHenry county ranks first in both mink and barley production in the state, and second in milk cows and milk production. Ropp explained that he operates on a $16,000,000 annual budget, half of which is ex pended on county fair programs. Of this figure, $41 ,450 goes to the McHenry County fair to meet various expenditures. There are 760 employees in his department who assist him in his chief responsibilities, which are checking weights and measures, meat in spection, grain inspection and issuing insecticide permits. He cited Illinois as the leading state in agricultural exports and ^related the Qhanging picture in farming. Ropp said that twenty years ago a farmer raised enough to ieed himself and fifteen others; "today that figure has risen to himself and fifty others through advancements in many areas of the business. Ropp was appointed to his position by Gov. Richard B. Ogilvie in October of 1970 after the former director, John W. Lewis, was selected to fill the vacancy of Secretary of State created by the death of Paul Powell Director Ropp, 38, farms in partnership with his father, Clarence, and his brother, Ray, a 500-acre grain and dairy enterprise. Save Two Dogs; Third Drowns In Fox River Monday Two dogs which ventured onto thin ice and broke through on the Fox river Monday af ternoon were saved and a third died. Many persons along the river watched the drama unfold as rescue efforts continued. As a result, Dr. J.V. Johnson, D.V.M., Division of Veterinarian Public Health department, 202 W. South street Woodstock, notified city and sheriff's police of a policy to be in effect in the future regarding calls for assistance.Dr. Johnson said he has been reluctant to respond in the past because his department does not have the necefssary equipment to rescue animals from county lakes and rivers. However, the Monday appeal prompted him to review the situation and change this policy. Dr. Johnson explained that the strong feelings for pets might well tempt some per sons, including children, to attempt a rescue effort alon^ placing their lives in jeopardy. In the future, Dr. Johnson asks that his inspector be notified and his department will respond to animal rescue calls as quickly as possibly, if it is only to direct operations. The numb^ to call is 338-3540 in Woodstock.
