The occasion was first round play in the National Junior College Tournament at Elgin Community College. McHenry had their coldest shooting night of the year as they could connect on only 17 of 68 attempts from the field for a frigid 25 percent. Jim Mulvenna was the only Scot to connect with any degree of accuracy. The six foot sophomore, playing his last game, took scoring honors with 24 points. Rick Bielski, the only other sophomore regular, contributed 6 points to the cause. Returning freshman who will form a nucleus for next year's team, include four of the first six players: Mark Hayes, Dennis May, Bruce Harbecke, and Joe Dehn. Bad luck always seems to come to those who have neither abiUty nor ambition. Elm (Next To Riverside Dr.) McHenjy 385-7122 Dick Rabbitt (who said he was on the crowd control detail) reminded us of the rivalry and crowds at Wood- stock-McHenry games in days gone by. In those days we needed a gym big enough to hold the crowds. Now we have the gym. Where are the crowds? At the end of the first quarter, McHenry led 21 to 9 and it looked like a run away game. Then came some turnovers by the Warriors. At one point in the third quarter, the Streaks drew within 7 points and made the crowd sit up and take notice. Johnsburg Jr. High Wins Fox Valley Conference Tourney The Johnsburg Wildcats won their Conference Tournament Saturday nite by squeaking past Harrison's Hurricanes with a 27-26 score. The traditional arch rivals ex changed the lead throughout the entire contest. Harrison gained the finals berth by beating a stubborn Fox River Grove team Friday nite 38-32. Johnsburg advanced to the finals by defeating Big Hollow 33-21. Large crowds cheered as their favorite teams exchanged basket for basket - free throw for free throw. Johnsburg held the biggest lead, of 5 points, at the close of the first half. The Hurricanes came out in the third quarter to close the gap to 1 point against the flat John sburg five. The teams scored equally in the final period to give Johnsburg the 1 point margin. The two teams had split their regular season series to share the league championship title with 9-1 records. The defeat of Harrison in the tourney final was a tremendous victory for the Johnsburg team. In the preliminary game for third placc Big Hollow's Warriors beat Fox River Grove's Eagles 27-25 in another see-saw battle. Johnsburg takes its 14-6 season record into the annual American Legion Tournament this Wednesday against Parkland of McHenry. Check these sport pages for in formation on the popular tournament to be held at Johnsburg Elementary School gym. IMPORTANT CASE Attorney General William J. Scott this past week listed the Volo Bog case, involving a 12,000-year-old ecological resource, as one of the most important to come his way in the past four years for its effect on future litigation. Have you noticed the style clothes the Chinese were wearing? And no long-haired Hippies there! Think our country will adopt these Chinese styles? GRANDMA Yes, Grandma, we were impressed with the ar chitecture. But, we must remember that only the better side of the tracks was shown. Our own country has some beauty spots - and some slums. As for the Hippies. We are not an admirer of that group, but have learned that all long haired ones are not Hippies. That fad will change as all fads have done. We liked what we saw of China and are hopeful. Beauty is as beauty does. Up at Johnsburg they tell us that it was necessary to draft "Grandpa" Lloyd Freund into service to play in the Forester state basketball tournament. They also tell us that "Grandpa" showed up some of those young kids. There area few bumper crops of hay harvested, that don't have a few weed seeds in it. The Warriors beat the Woodstock Blue Streaks by 10 points in this regional tour nament game, but had to turn on the steam late in the game. 0 Now comes the big one. The Warriors face the strong An tioch team Friday night. The winner goes to the Waukegan Sectional. Here's another note from Grandma: Been watching TV news this past week? Was very im pressed with the Chinese homeland. Their architecture is so different than ours. Their culture is so rich. Truly something so very wonderful to show a visitor. Antioch Nips Grant In Thrilling Overtime Victory In Regional The first Regional in the history of McHenry High School was a thrilling victory f<£r the Antioch Sequoits. Trailing for the entire ball game Antioch came from a twelve point deficit to tie the score on two freethrows by Williams and send the game into overtime. During this overtime period Antioch, the number one seeded team showed their superiority. They controlled the opening tip and scored four straight points on baskets by Mieure and Michalak. Grant struggled to catch up but their attempt was futile as Mieure hit two freethrows to increase the Sequoits lead to three points with 3 seconds remaining in the overtime period. Olsen of the Grant Bulldogs hit a twenty foot jump shot at the buzzer but it was not enough. Thus Antioch V *
