Mr. and Mrs. Mick Heffernan and Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Trumble attended the WBH convention in Tomah, Wis., on March 5. John Zawaski and Joe Kozial attended both conventions. Reports were encouraging on this year's mild Wisconsin winter. This will aid the deer herd and increase fawn production for the coming season. It was reported that 6,924 (4 more than in 1970) deer were taken by bow and 76 bear bowkills (5 more than in 1970). However, 12,924 or slightly less than twice the number of deer taken by bowhunters were confirmed car kills in 1971. Highlights of the conventions will be on the agenda for the March 16 Northern Illini Bowmen meeting, 8 p.m. at McHenry Legion hall. Also final reports for the Slush Shoot on Sunday, March 19. The attempt was slightly off target but gave the crowd a thrill. (PLAINDEALER PHOTO) c \ Ted Pitzen arrived home from the Doyle Ranch in sunny, warm Colorado just in time for our worst day of the winter (Monday). And he brought us a cigar that looks a foot long with wrapper that reads: "Texas Miniatures." Know those Texans do things in a big way, but wonder how they handle a full size cigar if this is a miniature. EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITORJ Think we saw him going that- a-way Monday. That Carmel basketball team was no fluke. They gave a highly rated North Chicago team all they could handle before losing by three points. It doesn't pay to look at the records at tournament time. Tossing out some old notes and noticed some recent big bowling scores posted by the ladies. Nancy Kadisak, 245-580. Fancy, Nancy! Emrai Damians: 203-535 -- following a 560 series. An "Emmy" for Emmi. Mary Lynn, 209 - 537. Merry, Mary! Barbar Gay, 225-532. Happy day for Barbara Gay! Saw some boys with bats and balls Saturday. Also saw kites flying. Then came the snowballs. ANOTHER REMINDER - If any of you boys want to play ball next summer, be sure to register. NOW. Check your group. We have printed notices. Saturday may be your last chance. Move over, men. The gals are taking over the alleys. Don Howard got a group of Rotarians and Rotary Anns together Thursday night for dinner and stage pay at McHenry Country Club. If you want to hear all your faults, run for office or try to be appointed to the Supreme Court. The automobile and boat shows are wonderful if for no other reason than it gives jobs to a lot of beautiful girls. More fun than an ice cream social. The play and the cast were real good. Saw our first robin Saturday when the temperature was 60 degrees. A big fat blimp. The Chicago Bears drew a whoppin' big crowd here Friday night and put on quite a show against our Firemen No. 1 Cagers. The game made a nice bundle for the McHenry Area Rescue Squad - and that means all of us will benefit. Would Bill Melton make The Silly Little Mistake? "Although 1,363 birds over the quota of 24.000 geese, this is an acceptable figure to the U.S. B u r e a u o f S p o r t F i s h e r i e s a n d Wildlife," said Director Bark- hausen. "We feel that we do one of the best jobs in the Mississippi Flyway of keeping track of our goose harvest. We have to antici pate when we feel we will reach our quota so as to give ample notice of the season closure to sportsmen." The Fireball Eight musicians played at the game (donated their services) and then pepped up the party after the game. 'Twas a big event in McHenry. Everybody joined in to make it a success^/ Now to get ready for St. Patrick's Day. Factors such as hunting pres sure, weather and movement of geese in the area are difficult vari ables to predict so that the exact quota allowance is realized, ac cording to Lyle Adams, assistant supervisor of the division of wild life resources. In Alexander County, 11,940 geese were harvested during the season. The count in Union Coun ty was 7,679 birds. Williamson and Jackson counties had a com bined total of 5,744. During last year's hunt, sports men in the four-county quota zone harvested 27.274 geese, 726 shy of the quota of 28,000. "Next year we will be in the best position ever to evaluate our quota," t h e director explained. "Our free Canada Goose Permit, which was issued to hunters this year, will allow us to establish an accurate count as to how many geese were harvested, and in which counties." \ The Bears gathered with a crowd at the V.F.W. and had such a great time they want to come back. GREAT YARDAGE by Don Shy as he comes around right end after a hand off from Jack Concannon. Shy broke tackles in his fine run but failed to make his basket at the goal line.
