McHENRYCOUNTY ZONING BOARD OF APPEALS BY: Joseph Crabb, Chairman Attorneys for Petitioners: KELL & CONERTY 121 E. Calhoun Street Woodstock, Illinois 60098 Telephone: 815-338-4511 (Pub. March 22,1972) Defenders At Workshop On Recycling Representing the Recycling committee of the McHenry County Defenders, Mr. and Mrs. Louis E. Marchi of McHenry attended a workshop on recycling in Urbana recently. The workshop was conducted by the Champaign- Urbana branch of HIPS (Housewives Involved in Pollution Solutions). The history and organization of their recycling program for med the bulk of the program. Residents of Champaign- Urbana have been par ticipating in a recycling program since November, 1970. Initially, collections were made sporadically by HIPS and other civic groups through the means of paper and glass drives. In September, 1971, containers were placed at three super markets that donated the containers and were interested in cooperating in the effort. Citizens brought their paper, cans and bottles to these centers. Members of HIPS collected, sorted and sold the materials to scrap dealers for recycling 6 Major Richard Squire, a local resident and Navy officer, became interested in this en deavor. After careful study of the problems involved and the willingness of citizens to cooperate in this venture, he organized a company called the Twin City Reclamation and Recycling center. Since its organization in June, 1971, papers and bottles have been picked up from the three shopping centers by Squire, sorted, baled in the case of newspapers and crushed in the case of glass, and sent on to recycling companies nearby. An average of 600 pounds of glass and 4,000 pounds of paper is picked up each day . Initially, cans were also collected, but the distance to be hauled and the comparative bulkiness of cans made this part of the program financially un feasible. At present cans are not being recycled. In additipn to newspaper, Squirei recycles any kind of clean paper - magazines, school scrap paper, ledger paper, old textbooks, junk mail, card board, computer cards, etc. In order to handle such paper, he utilizes both a shredder and a bailer The price brought by paper varies from $8 a ton to $50 a ton, depending on the type of paper and the demand for it at the moment. Irish Coffee Indeed A well known district justice was sitting in the lounge of a hotel on a hot day drinking a steaming cup of coffee. A close friend arrived and said, "Why don't you drink something cooling9 Have you ever tried chilled gin and tonic9" "No," said the justice, "but I've tried a lot of fel lows who have." It's a rough setting where Newman's father, Henry Stamper (Henry Fonda) owns one of the few remaining in dependent lumber logging operations in the Pacific Northwest. At a time when surrounding logging com panies are frozen by strikes, the Stamper crew continues to operate independently and it is evident that trouble is brewing. Newman as Hank, son of Henry Stamper, tangles with his father over his wife,Viv (Lee Remick),who the elder Stamper vigorously dislikes. And, as the film progresses it is obvious there's an im pending logging accident. The scenery is vivid and the action is rough, at times, in this film rated "GP--pa rental guidance suggested." Just Deserts "And furthermore," the female battle-ax told her lawyer, "you might warn my husband that if he misses a single alimony payment, I'll repossess him." Maybe you've been cheating yourself all these years. Every year, between January and April, millions of people sit down to do battle with Uncle Sam. Some are "self styled' accountants. Others think they can save a few dollars doing it themselves--so why not. The sad truth is, how ever, no matter what their reason was for starting, many of them end the same. On the short end. You see, when it comes to income taxes, amateurs should depend on H&R Block. We have all the facilities to help you make "income tax time" a pleasant experience. To begin with, H & R Block now has over 6,000 conveniently located offices manned by thousands of specially trained personnel who are anxious to help you. They'll sit you down over s free cup of coffee and show you some things about your in come tax that you might never have known existed. For example, do you know all about deductions for child care or casualty losses? And maybe you aren't aware that if your income increased last year, you may be able to save tax dollars by "income averaging." Well, when it comes to income taxes,H&R Block is aware of just about everything because we're a company that eats, sleeps, and drinks tax returns 365 days s year. Yes, maybe you can save a couple of bucks by doing your own return but it really may be costing you a lot more by not having your return done by H&R Block. DON'T LET AN AMATEUR DO H&R BLOCK'S JOB.
