mGEB-PlAINDEAlER-FRIDAY. MARCH 24, 1972 Holiday Hills KeNen Marge Connell 385-6344 385-3756 Cub Scoufe Corn Blue Ribbon At Seovt-O-Jtoma Our Holiday Hills Pack s booth was entitled "Under the Sea" and the boors made a complete underwater scene of the famous "Sea-lab" which was constructed off the coast of California for experimental purposes. Their display in cluded the sea-lab, different types of fish, shells, plant life arid just looking at it made you feel like you were on the bottom of the giant Pacific. Much credit must be given to our Cubmaster and his wife, Joe. and Barbara Emmons, Den Mothers Sharon Kottke and Robbi Nicholas, Webelos Leader Bill Boettcher, and thfe rest of the committee who helped make this beautiful display possible and of course all the boys who worked so hard on it. The Pack sold approximately sixty tickets and fifty percent of the sales will be returned to our own pack treasury, so it also is a nice money making project for the pack to help them continue on their many wor thwhile projects. Congratulations to all of Pack 458 and to their sponsor, the Laches Auxiliary, Post 4600, V.F.W. Many units from the area were represented in this great Scout show and you once again proved that you can come in with a first place blue ribbon, are a first rate pack and everyone in Holiday Hills are very proud of all of you. EASTER EGG HUNT MARCH 26 The annual Holiday Hills Easter Egg Hunt will be held this Sunday, March 26, at 1:30 p.m. at the Abbink residence, 1505 W. Evergreen Street. As in the past, there will be two groups of children who will hunt for eggs. One field will be filled with eggs for children up to 5 (six) years of age, and the other field will have eggs hidden for children from 7 (seven) to 11 (eleven). This year the Easter Egg Hunt is being sponsored by the Holiday Hills Women's Club, but all children from Holiday Hills in the age brackets above are eligible to come and hunt for eggs. There will be a golden and silver egg in each field, for which a special prize will be awarded to the finder. Also, some eggs will have markings on them which will entitle the finders to receive nickles and pennies. The Girl Scout Troop 478 here in our subdivision have volunteered to do all the egg coloring, and many, many women have volunteered to donate the thirty to forty dozen eggs needed. So this is really a community project for the kids. The only thing requested, is that each child bring along some kind of container in which to collect tils eggs. See you all at 1:90 p.m. Sunday afternoon! BOYSCOUT CAMP-OUT Two of our local Boy Scouts, Timmv Hughes and Ricky Connell, had a real "fun" weekend recently when they went on a winter camp-out with their Boy Scout Troop 162 from McHenry. Approximately twenty-six boys in all left on Saturday, March 4, at 7 a.m. and traveled up to the Will Rogers Shagbark Camp near Wilmot, Wis. The weekend consisted of "singing round the fire, popping pop corn, snowball fights, hiking, following trails with the use of a compass and everybody having a real good time. The boys returned late Sunday afternoon, March 5, a little tired from all the activity, but both agreeing they sure did have a good time. "FLEA-MARKET" If anyone caught a whiff of wax cooking in the subdivision lately, it was probably coming from the Karafa kitchen as Joyce has been extremely busy working on her beautiful candles to get them finished in time for the "Flea-Market" which was held in Carol Stream, 111., this past week. Joyce and her sister-in-law, Jean Vicha, entered a display table and were quite thrilled at their success in selling many of their decorative candles and lovely hand beaded scarves. As Joyce puts it, "they really had a ball". With the children in school, she now has the time to finally use her artisitic talents and is really making some beautiful home made hand craft items. A VERY WELCOME VISITOR Nick and Naomi Adam of Sunset Drive are real happy to report that their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. David Algeo, who have been living in West Long Branch, N.J., are mvoing back to the Midwest. Dave has been transferred in his job and spent several days here in Holiday Hills while searching for a new home for his family. FAMILY BIRTHDAY PARTY The Laskowski family, Joan, Lou, Johnny who was home from Eastern Illinois University on semester break and daughter Judy who lives in Chicago packed their bags and drove to South Bend, Ind., recently to spend the weekend with their son, Mark, his wife, Patti, and their two children, Aimee-Jon and Kris-Elise. Kay Ryan, Patti's Mom, also went along to complete the family reunion and help Mark celebrate his birthday which was March 3. EARLY ST. PATRICK'S DAY mm • good Irlsh- oot day of the year is not long enough to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, so his family started a little early and traveled into Chicago on Sunday, March 12 for a premature St. Patrick's Day dinner. It was held at the home of Pat's brother, Wally Swan, his wife, Jackie, and their two children, Ricky and Michelle. Besides Ed, Pat, Denise, Timmy, Tommy, little Ed and Kimberly, also present were Pat's nephew, Wally, his wife, Ronnell, and their little boy, Bryon, who is two years old and Pat's great-nephew. Everyone had a wonderful time; even the weather cooperated and highlight of the afternoon was a basketball game in the alley. Strange as it may seem, our kids who are raised in the country, don't realize what alleys are, and this really fascinated the kids. All agreed however, it's nice to go into Chicago, but our wide open spaces and country living sure beat living in the big city. WOMEN 'S CLUB MEETING The Holiday Hills Women's Club held its monthly meeting on March 8, at the home of Mary Ann Mahon. Among many items under discussion was the May dinner and theatre party. It was decided that it will be held on May 10, at the Chateau Louise in Dundee. More information regarding price, menu, play, etc., will be presented at the April meeting. It was also decided that this year's swimming lessons again will be held the first two weeks after school recesses for the summer, and will be taught by Mrs. April Dougherty. The program for the meeting in April will be robber bingo and a film from the Girl Scout Council Office in Elgin on a community effort to clean up the Fox River. Servers for the March meeting were Donna Kasprzyk and Connie Catan- zaro. CONDOLENCES Sincere sympathy is ex tended to several Holiday Hills families this past week. First, to the family of Michael Novak of Cedar Street, whose father, Gerald E. Novak of Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of Wonder Lake who passed away on March 5. Sympathy is also extended to the Robert Kellen family. Bonnie's uncle, George W. Cook, of Kissimmee, Fla., passed away on Feb. 29. He will be greatly missed by all his nieces and nephews, as he was one of their favorites. Also to John and Betty Kessler of Park Terrace on the death of John's father, Joseph J. Kessler, 86 years old. He passed away last week in Memorial Hospital, Woodstock. A funeral Mass was offered on Tuesday, March 14, at St. Thomas church in Crystal Lake and burial was in Resurrection Cemetery located in Justice, 111. May they all rest in peace. A HAPPY REUNION Barbara Emmons and little Lori had a vary unexpected five day vacation recently, but It also was a vary Happy family reunion. They accompanied Barb's brother, Roger Moen, who just returned from Viet nam up to Alma, Wis., to the home of their mother and father. While there, they also made a trip over to Red Wing, Minn., to visit Barbara's grandmother, Mrs. Barbara Strand, who has been ill for some time and no medicine could perk up Grandma more than seeing the smiling faces of her grandchildren. LUCK OF THE IRISH Maybe it was just the "luck of the Irish" last week, but Marge Connell sure had a pleasant surprise when she was in formed that she had won the treasure chest for the day and was to come in and select merchandise at a local store in Wauconda. Happy shopping Marge, it's always fun when it's on the house and you don't have to pay for it yourself. LITTLE LEAGUE OF THE LAKES NEWS Although there was a registration for the Minor, Major and Babe Ruth Leagues last Friday and Saturday, many boys have not yet registered. Therefore tomorrow, Saturday, March 25, there will be another registration from 9 a.m. until 12 noon at the Island Lake grade school in Island Lake. All boys who plan to play ball this season and who have not yet registered, please be there as the managers are trying to set up their teams and must know just how many boys are either returning or dropping out of the League. Parents, please ac company your boys as there is a permission slip that you must sign before any boy can play. It won't be long before that "Ump" calls out "Play Ball" and your boy certainly doesn't want to be left out, so if he is not yet registered, do so tomorrow. There will also be a decal drive from May 14 to May 28 with a prize for the boy who sells the most decals. Further information may be had by contacting Pat Hughes at 385- 4855. SNOWMOBILING TRIP Roger and Bev Saunders and their children, Laurie and Jill, and Richard and Libby Hellmig and their children, Kathy, Gordon and David, have been making the most of the wintry weather still left. Last weekend they camped and snowmobiled the Lake Winnebago area from north of Fond du Lac, Wis., to High Cliff State Park where there are seven miles of scenic trails. With the weather unusually warm - temperatures were in the 50's in mid-Wisconsin - several stops were necessary which gave the children an opportunity to play in the snow, liie Hellmigs were also trying out their new motor home and enjoyed it immensely. I guess there are two families in Holiday Hills who aren't anxious for spring to come when they'll have to put away the snowmobiles for another season. McWILLIAMS VISIT Sunday, March 19, brought an unexpected surprise to the Connell family on Oak Lane as former Holiday Hills residents, Bob and Kay McWilliams, and their four boys, Jimmy, Bobby, Wayne and Brian, came for a visit. Although they moved from Holiday Hills over four years ago to Belvidere, they come back occasionally to see the many friends they made while living here. The boys are very active in their sports in Belvidere, but Bobby McWilliams has taken on a real challenge. He is ah active member of the Future Farmers of America and last fall bought himself a six month old, six-hundred pound Black Angus Steer which he is raising as his F.F.A. Project. In just several months, his weight has increased to eight hundred and fifty pounds and Bobby hopes by August, he will have him up to weigh in at about twelve hundred pounds, and then plans to enter him in the County Fair at Woodstock. Good luck to you Bob on your new ven ture, and who knows, perhaps you have a future Grand Champion on your hands and we'll see you parading around the International Am phitheater. BOWLING NEWS Everything's over now but the "hooting and the hollaring" for our six lady bowlers, Marge Connell, Cheri Hogland, Pat Hughes, Bonnie Kellen, Erna Novak and Tillie Williams who entered the Fox Valley Women's Bowling Association Tournament on the past two Saturdays, March 4 and March 11, down in Elgin. It will be several weeks yet till all scores and averages are tabulated, but our gals did very well in some events and are hoping to cash in on some of the prize money. Even if they don't however, it was the first tournament that most of them had ever bowled in and all agree it was really a lot of fun. SLUMBER PARTY TO CELEBRATE BIRTHDAY The Hellmig family recently spent a rather sleepless night while four friends of their daughter Kathy helped her celebrate her birthday at a slumber party. Kathy was 13 on March 4, and friends helping her celebrate were Barb Smith, Shelley Williams, Sue Hy, and Patsy Boyle. GET-WELL WISHES Little baby Renats Hanke, eight months old, spent four days in McHenry Hospital recently due to a virus, but we're glad to report she is now home and coming along nicely. Get-well wishes are also sent to Jerry Hamaker who is recuperating at Sherman hospital in Elgin following an operation several weeks ago. We all hope to see you up and around real soon Jerry. Betty Smith of Hyde Park is also in the hospital recuperating from an operation and sincere get well wishes are sent to her. One other little lady in our subdivision, Diana Gregg, is having her little problems with itching as it seems she was overtaken with the chicken pox this past weekend. Don't scratch them honey, and it will all be over with in a few more days. Just don't get too close to little brothers, Keith and Brian, or in another week or so, they'll be the ones doing the itching. A cheery get-well wish to A1 Rowlett of Algonquin who is recovering in McHenry hospital following an emergency appendectomy. A1 is the fiance of Connie Abbink, and they will be married this summer. We all hope A1 will be up and around soon. VISITORS FROM DENVER Our brother and sister-in- law, Dennis and Lynn Kellen, have bean spending this past week with relatives in Illinois. They reside in Denver, Colo. A week ago Wednesday, Marie and Harold Kellen, Bob's mom and dad, and Denny and Lynn spent an afternoon with us here in Holiday Hills, and then we all went out to dinner in Wilraet, Wis. A very pleasant evening - too bad they live so far away. But we do enjoy it when they come. JANIK NEWS The Janik home on Hyde Park was once again bubbling with lots of activity as Tom and Mike came home from Eastern Illinois University which is located in Charleston, for semester break. Mike was only here for a weekend however, and then left for Miami, Fla., with the University varsity baseball team. He spent seven days in the Florida sunshine in spring training with his team. While there, they played seven games and Mike's position with the team is second base. Tom spent his semester break at home here with Mom, Dad, and sister Linda and brought home with him the wonderful news that he has been elected vice-president of the Pi Kappa Alph£ fraternity. Tom is living at the fraternity house at Eastern while Mike shares an apartment with cousin, Johnny Laskowski. The house is now quiet once again as the boys have all returned to school, but it sure was nice to have them home for a little while and Ed and Josephine can certainly be proud of their two sons. OUR ATHLETES Congratulations are iii store for three outstanding athletes from Holiday Hills, Debbie Mahon, Eileen Connell and Steve Kasprzyk. Debbie was one of ten girls and the only one from Holiday Hills to be picked for the All- Star G.A.A. basketball team at McHenry high school, East Campus. They played their tournament game last Friday night, March 17, and won 15-7. Deb herself scored five points and that's real good playing. Eileen attends McHenry Junior High and was chosen for their All-Star volleyball team. They played in a tournament last Saturday, March 18, and competed against teams from Montini, Round Lake, Hickory Hill, Parkland, Cary and Wauconda. Although they did not win the trophy, they displayed good sportsmanship and made many new friends. Steve was the only one from Holiday Hills picked for the Freshman A squad basketball team and has been kept busy with their schedule which just ended the season playing in the North Chicago frosh tourney. He definitely i6 a future varsity star. GRISWOLDLAKE ATHLETIC CLUB Friday, March 17, was not only St. Patrick's night, but also the meeting of the Griswold Lake Athletic club and first thing on their agenda was the election of officers for the coming year. Clint Raven was elected president; Joe Maras was elected vice- president; Bill Mahon is their secretary and the new treasurer is Ken Farman. Congratulations to this group of fine men who have been chosen to run this fine organization. Their next meeting will be held at Mahon's home on Birch Street on Friday, April 21, at 8 p.m. at which time the new officers will take over on their newly- elected respective jobs. GIRL SCOUT NEWS Although they may be only nine, ten or eleven years old, three of our little Junior Girl Scouts belong to Troop 478's "over fifty club". This time however, it does not pertain to age, but to boxes of cookies sold during the recent Girl Scout cookie sale. Wfcea you work hard at •amethlag, the results are araaBy vary rewarding, and this was true in the case of our Cub Scout Pack 458 as you can see the delight in their faces (see picture above) as Den Mother Robbi Nicholas and Cub Scouts Bobby White and BUly Nicholas proudly display the blue ribbon which was awarded to our Cub Scout Pack at the Scout-O-Rama last Saturday, March 18 at the Crystal Lake high school in Crystal Lake. A blue ribbon is a first place award that is given for "Proficiency" in Scouting and really quite an honor to receive one. Cindy . Rasbaugh, Barbara Grasser and Diane Boettcher each sold more than fifty boxes of cookies themselves and certainly deserve a little recognition for the fine salesmanship which they have displayed. Altogether our Holiday Hills Troop 478 sold 504 boxes of cookies and this is really a fine record for our girls and also will help our leaders continue the fine work they are doing, as the troop gets 10 cents back on every box of cookies sold. Much credit must also be given to Pat Hughes, who is the cookie chairman for this area and is responsible for keeping all the records and money in the proper order which is quite a chore. Earlier in the season, the girls sold Girl Scout calendars and altogether sold seventy- four. The leaders, committee- mothers and Scouts would like to take this opportunity to thank every resident in Holiday Hills, Griswold Lake Hills and Villa Vaupel for making this Girl Scout Project the mar velous success that it was. SAWISCH GRADUATION March 10 will always be a memorable day in the hearts of Mr. and Mrs. L. Sawisch of Birch Street as they proudly watched the two hour graduation ceremony of their son, Richard, as he completed his training and was graduated from Boot Camp at Fort Polk, La. Richard will be stationed down there until May, serving with the National Guard Reserve, and then *|>lans on returning home to Holiday Hills. Miss Jan Major of Wonder Lake, Richard's fiancee, ac companied Mr. and Mrs. Sawisch on the six day trip. Richard will find himself very busy when he returns as Jan and he have set their wedding date for Sept. 16 of this year and will certainly have many plans to make upon his return. Rep. Waddell Appointed To Data Commission -House Speaker W. Robert Blair (R-Park Forest) has announced the appointment of Rep. Bruce Waddell (R- Dundee) as a member of the Data Information Systems commission. Rep. Waddell, sponsor of House Bill 2383, has announced he will call the first meeting of the commission on or about April 9. He expects the com mission to continue an in vestigation of state-wide computer operating ef ficiencies, including those computers in use on University campuses. "I support education but I cannot condone the misuse of any resource which is provided by public funds," Rep. Waddell said. "We must have the judgment to recognize that computers are worthwhile only when they are used efficiently. We must continue our effort to lower state government overhead." Any money wasted on unused computers could be applied more efficiently to improve the professor-teacher ratio, he summarized, "and providing increased educational op portunities to more students." Purpose of the proposed bill is to unify the systems of data processing among universities. It is one of six companion bills in the overall unification of computer programming and coordination among state units. A savings in expenditure on equipment, personnel and coordination is anticipated, Rep. Waddell said.
