BY ORDER OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION OF COM MUNITY HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 156 McHENRY COUNTY, ILLINOIS. DATED THIS MARCH 1972. 21 day of JAMES ALTHOFF President EDWARD J. NEUMANN, Jr. Secretary BOARD OF EDUCATION SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 156 (Pub. March 24,1972) The growth of all forest timber in U.S. is about 11 billion feet yearly. The moment of truth is about to arrive on a decision for virtual abandonment of our antiquated system of weights and measures in favor of the International Metric System. Resistance to change which has prevented adoption of the metric system for almost 200 years appears finally to be yielding to the pressures of reason which are impelling a program of conversion. A three-year comprehensive study completed by the National Bureau of Standards last August recommended general adoption of metric measurements of weight, volume, length and tem perature. The report suggested a target date 10 years from the time Congress takes final action. Details of the program to implement the metric study report finally have reached the hearing stage in the United States Senate and will shortly be the subject of hearings in the United States House of Representatives. Adoption of the metric system would require us to deal in terms of the liter (ap proximately one quart), the meter (about one yard), the kilogram (about two pounds), and temperature in terms of Celsius degrees (which establishes zero as the freezing point of water and 100 degrees as the boiling point). Conversion to the new system would provide a great many advantages including: (a) opportunities for expanded foreign trade, (b) the con clusion of international agreements covering uniform engineering and scientific standards, (c) the facilitating of interchange of replacement parts in military and non- - military equipment, (d) the avoidance of mistakes, ac cidents and losses occasioned by use of a dual system -- and many other benefits. While slightly different ap proaches are contained in legislation developed by this member of Congress, as well as - die chief Senate proponent Senator Claiborne Pell of Rhode Island and in a Joint Resolution recommended by the Department of Commerce, the general objectives of all of these legislative approaches appear to be substantially the same, namely (a) a ten-year target date for conversion to the metric system, (b) a coordinating Conversion Commission to direct the in dustrial and business com munities in a comprehensive conversion program, (c) an action program which is primarily voluntary and (d) an educational plan to be carried It! Basic to the pending legislation is a Metric Con version Coordinating board representative of the principal economic and social interests which are affected by the adoption of the metric system. The fears of some industrial groups must be allayed by outlining the economic ad vantages which can be measured in reduced manufacturing costs and of expanded foreign trade. A general plan to publicize the work of the Coordinating committee seems advisable in order to keep the public fully informed and to avoid any impression that the conversion program is being conducted behind closed doors. In addition to a relatively small Coordinating committee, it would seem desirable to establish an Advisory board representative of all of the various segments of our economy - including business organizations, retailers, labor organizations, scientific associations, educational organizations, federal agen cies, state and local units of g o v e r n m e n t , c o n s u m e r organizations, representatives of the media, including radio, television, and the press and citizen groups. The momentum for a com p r e h e n s i v e c o n v e r s i o n program has been established by the Study commission report. Any failure to im plement the report during this session of Congress would be a most serious blow to this historic legislative issue. It can probably be argued that this is a very bad time for our nation to engage in a program of conversion to m e t r i c m e a s u r e m e n t s . However, any later time would be far worse. Although D-Day for final conversion to the Metric system may not arrive for ten years, D-Day for "a Plan" to establish the Metric system as o u r o f f i c i a l ( a n d v i r t u a l l y exclusive) system of weights and measures is about to arrive. We dare not fail to take the decisive action in this year of 1972 which this step in human progress requires. How Christ Healed Sick, Church Lesson How did Christ Jesus heal the sick?
