sportswear: omething or Everyone By ALICE LAKE The sportswear bag for spring is packed with clas sic wearable shapes--Jack ets pants, shirts and skirts -- the separates that go to gether to make a casual, elegant costume to suit the occasion at hand. * The sportswear idea has graduated from tennis court, golf course and bridle path to encompass a whole new way of dressing, think ing and living that's as much an American classic as its fabrics and silhou ettes. It's spring's biggest fash ion story, covering every inch of the wardrobe from playclothes to evening wear. And it's a colorful story, for the most part in bright: patriotic red, white and blue, sunlit orange and bronze, citrus lemons and limes, and innocent pinks and orchids. The fabrics are mostly old favorites borrowed from the Fifties: seersucker, ging ham, linen, gray flannel, sharkskin, natural flecked cotton, chintz -- and most especially, chino. Chino may well replace denim as the sportswear basic, in its own natural khaki shade or dyed bright crayon colors. You'll see it in dresses, culottes, short skirts, fatigue and safari Jackets, sailor pants, six- pocket shirts and shorts. Seersucker is also big news and plaid seersucker biggest of all. The tradi tional menswear stripe Is also used in tailored pant- suits. Gingham is another powerful revival. In all sizes and colors from tiny checks to huge plaids. Bright colors and big pat terns call for bigger shapes: deep dolman and kimono sleeves give shirts and dresses a different look, while the smock begins to edge out the blazer as the top-^verything jacket. Skirts -- knee-length or maxi -- continue to be im portant. The circle skirt and straight skirt are newest. Knife pleats are every where. Some new skirts have a high rise waist. The new pants have wider flares and split knee or fanny-pants shaping. The pants scene breaks down into three* major looks: trousers with higher waists and cuffs, low rise wich big iflare legs, and Jeans In manv fabrics. Traditional blazers and soft French smocks are the most popular jackets to mix with skirts and pants for a suit-look. Cardigan jackets look newer than blazers and short wrap coats add vari ety. Shirt dresses, many with pleated skirts, are the uni form of the day. At night, it's bare and glamorous separates: halter tops, off- the-shoulder blouses and plunge-neck shirts all top soft skirts that are often slit up the side. Blazer jackets, long sweaters and shawls make good evening toppers. TRIM LINES Slated to be seen by the pool, on the beach or lawn are summer sandals in waxy and stained leathers. When trim is used to set off the rich yet rugged finish of the leather, it is usually brass rings or studs, heavy stitch ing, wooden beads or rope. spurgeons Reg 1 99 <f -Tl and 2 29 I./# New knit tops ir all the latest style? for all the outfits i i a 7 to 14 girl's lif t\ Ny lons, terrief, cot tons. polyest ,-rs . . . all on sale th .s week!
