(DON PEASLEY PHOTO) PLAN BANQUET Mr. and Mrs. David (Doris) Henken and Mr. and Mrs. Lou Rossberg were special guests at the annual father-daughter banquet Sunday, March 12, at the McHenry American post home. Mrs. Henken is the auxiliary president and Mr. Rossberg is the commander of the McHenry post. Sixty-four guests were in attendance to see Cindy Reid receive her Junior past president's charm. Mary Ann Einspar and Noelle Reid were awarded fifteen-year member pins. Rhonda Lee and Coleen Miller were given 10-year pins. New members initiated into the Junior auxiliary were Cheryl Matchen, Christine Amettis, Barbara Gieske, Patty Henken, Susan Hoover, Barbara Wagner and Debbie and Diane Wagner, 18-month-old twins, the youngest members ever to be initiated into the McHenry Junior group. After a delicious dinner prepared and served by the McHenry unit, Ed and Maria Guettler led the group in community singing. NURSE SCHOLARSHIPS Through the years a great many young ladies and also a few young men have become nurses because of the scholarships provided to them through the Past Presidents' Parley program. Formerly in the amount of $375 each, the scholarship has been increased to $500 by the action of the convention in July, 1970. Past president, Mrs. Court­ ney (Cecilia) Violett, of McHenry Unit 491, American Legion auxiliary, has an­ nounced the following rules for the candidate: 1. Must be in senior year or a graduate of an accredited high school and in need of financial assistance to continue education. 2. Scholarships are to be used for three-year courses in an accredited hospital or for four or five year academic courses including training in a hospital. 3. Additional items to be submitted with the application which shows the candidate's name and address are: (a) Four letters of recom­ mendation certifying as to the entrant's qualifications, character, and need of finan­ cial assistance, these letters from: (1) President of the sponsoring unit; (2) High school from which entrant will be or is graduated; (3) Pastor of candidate's church; (4) A representative citizen and acquaintance. (b) A letter from applicant stating why she or he wants to be a nurse. UNIT 491 By Pearl Cooper A total of thirty-one past presidents and guests attended the fifth annual Past Presidents dinner of McHenry Unit 491, American Legion auxiliary, March 19, at the McHenry post home. Guests were Mrs. David (Doris) Henken, McHenry unit president, and post com­ mander, Lou Rossberg, and Mrs. Rossberg. The county past presidents will meet at the Harvard post home. All past presidents are asked to make reservations with Mrs. Courtney (Cecilia) Violett by April 15. The date for the dinner is Thursday, April 20. It was announced that the next meeting of the unit past presidents will be held April 13 at the home of Mrs. Jack (Pearl) Cooper. Degree of financial need - 25 percent.
