Said it was snowing and blowing up there in Johnsburg. Funny we didn't have any down here. Of course, we are further south! The Smiths spent a won derful winter in Florida, but came home to Christmas weather. When Clarence told us .the hours it took them to get home, we decided they flew, but not in an airplane. The Millers' vacation ended on a sad note, but Pearl is in the Memorial Hospital for McHenry County at Woodstock and improving every day. Pearl's friendly way made her a hest of friends who are pulling hard for her. S.l.H. is one of them. /' Fred Kusch handed us a story for this issue. When we opened it, we read "Hutch Retires". The story tells of Coach Bill Hutchinson's retirement as coach of the MCHS varsity wrestling team. All along the path we have openly rated "Hutch" as not only a good coach but a good man-and good men are good for our schools and for our community. "Hutch" had the ability to coach other sports that seem to be glamorous to more numerous the fans, but he can retire with the satisfaction that he made better men out of good boys. To strike or not to strike-that is the question. We don't like strikes-period - and hope the old "Play Ball" will bring the game back to the status of sport. A strike may not hurt the owners, but it certainly would be a let-down for the fans Owners like Cub owner Phil Wrigley and Gussie Busch of the Cardinals could lock tlie gates for the whole season and still eat three squares a day. As near as we can learn, people are still chewing gum and drinking beer. After talking to Clyde Black- well, an Old Farmers' Almanac man, we left our snow tires on the buggy. Some people are reminding us that we predicted bad weather this week, but sun shine for Easter. Still think the break will come. Ever the optimist. (But, we may be forced to retire from forecasting if things go wrong Sunday). If this snow stays, it won't be hard to track the Easter bunny. Lake Geneva Stock Car Racing Under New Management By Fred Kusch The man who started coaching wrestling Hyears ago at MCHS, stepped down from his duties as head wrestling coach thus ending the first wrestling era at MCHS. Starting from scratch Bill Hutchinson built an impressive record of 10 straight winning seasons and finished his career with lOwinning seasons against 4 losers. During those 14 years "Hutch" had some great teams. In 14 seasons he guided his team to 1 first place finish; 2 second places; 2 thirds and 3 fourths in conference com petition. In conference com petition Hutch mentored 18 individual champions second only to North Chicago. In state competition Hutch's Warriors carried the Orange and Black Banner proudly as Warrior teams won the district tourney twice in 1962 and 1968 and finished second in 1963 and 1966. Bill coached 22 individual district champs. Highlighting the Warrior competitiors in State competition were 4 wrestlers who went to the state finals with Dan Kinnerk finishing fourth in 1961. In state competition in 1962 Hutch's team qualified 11 wrestlers in the district finals compiling 123 pants a district record which still stands. Finishing a truly fine career dedicated to the betterment of the young men and women of the community, Hutch will be missed in wrestling ranks. Monday night at the winter Stock car racing at the Lake Geneva Raceway will be under new management for the 1972 season. HATO Racing Inc., will conduct the auto racing events on the oval track while the Leopard Corporation will continue to present the drag strip events. HATO Racing is heavy on past racing experience. It in cludes the 1971 IRA Lake Geneva driver champion of modified stock cars, Whitey Harris, Lake Villa and Ray Toft, Antioch. Harris has been in stock car racing for nearly ten years in which time he has accounted for seven different track championships in the modifieds. He has also com peted in USAC Late model stock car racing. Ray Toft brings a wide background of racing administration ac tivities to the HATO group. He has been a car owner of all classes of stock cars and has assisted and managed racing events for several years at Wilmot, Lake Geneva, Waukegan and Chicago. This group will present late model, sportsman, modified and spectator stock car racing each Saturday night starting April l until May 20 when the modifieds will switch to Sunday nights and will be under the sanction and direction of the Interstates Racing Association. Saturday nights and special nights will then continue to be the fender type of stock cars. SPORTSMEN ALERT A call Wednesday afternoon informed the Plaindealer that motorists along Pioneer road off Rt. 31, north of McHenry, may obtain a look at between 200and 300ducks and Canadian geese on a ten-acre lake. In terested persons are urged to remember that these birds are wild and will fly away if ap proached. It is recommended that they be viewed from the car. PLAINDEALER PHOTO Bradenton, Fla. -- I t 's hard to see how anyone, even the Cardinals , can overtake the Pit tsburgh Pirates if the world champions ' pi tchers come through. And in early exhibit ion play, admittedly not enough for a f inal judg ment, the Pirate staff look ed good. Doc Ell is is a question mark and Bruce Kison was supposedly tired out by the end of the 1971 season. Bob Moose and Luke Walker have a history of arm trouble. If all this possible pitching trouble materializes, the Cards or someone else might beat out the champs. But that doesn' t seem likely. And what is obvious, and why some sports writers in Florida are already choosing the Pirates to repeat , is that manager Bil l Virdon has aoout two good men for every posit ion on the team. / The Pirates have heavy hit t ing al l through the l ine up, speed on the bases, good catching and promising rookies coming up, crowding s e a s o n e d p e r f o r m e r s . There 's Roberto Clemente, Will ie Stargell , Gene Clines and A1 Oliver, plus new tal ent in the outfield. The infield is so set three good men are competing for the second sack. If the Pirates don' t win, the pitch ing staff must fai l and fai l badly. PLAINDEALER PHOTO Comment On Sports BASEBALL On Friday, March 17, the McHenry G.A.A. All Star game was held. The Fresh-Soph game was first. Although the sophomores WOT by a score of 15-7 the freshmen put up a good, hard fight. During the first half of the game the freshmen were ahead almost continually, but at half- time the score was tied, 6-6. Then at the beginning of the second half the sophomore squad pulled ahead and stayed there for the remainder of the game. Before the next game began the seniors were honored during the "Senior Spotlight". Each girl received a rose from a junior and then the sponsors, Miss Samsoe and Miss Najdowski, told of their ac complishments in G.A.A. and their goals for the future. During the second game the juniors led a spirited fight against the seniors but the final score of the game was the seniors 29, juniors, 27. Both teams fought hard throughout the game and the final outcome was decided in the last seconds . The score was ^tied 27-27 when the juniors fouled and the seniors made both free shots clinching the victory. Each team had a coach and a squad of cheerleaders. They and the girls on the teams all contributed to the success of this year's All Star game. BY PETE FRITCHIE EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDIT0RJ Baseball players have given the go sign for the strike unless their demands are met. Nobody can fault a person for getting all they can, but we haven't talked to a baseball fan who is in sympathy with the strike. BUMPER STICKERS DONT FIND FAULT: \| FIMP A REMEDY.
